The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s Executive Mayor, Cllr Babalwa Lobishe, accompanied by the Chief Whip Wandisile Jikeka, Member of the Mayoral Committee for Roads and Transport Yolisa Pali-Jongilanga, Infrastructure and Engineering Acting Executive Director Joseph Tsatsire, RRTT Coordinator Zonile Ndoni, and Ward 47 Councillor Cllr Lungile Langbooi, conducted a bridge handover ceremony in Kariega today.
The primary purpose of the handover was to reopen the Cuyler bridge, reconnecting two areas. A budget of R3.8 million was allocated to restore the bridge to full functionality. Additionally, R6.2 million was set aside for work in the Gibbon area, which falls under disaster recovery efforts. This included rock filling underneath the bridge. The project, scheduled to be completed in four months, has seen significant progress, with work continuing even on weekends to meet deadlines.
Mayor Lobishe expressed her excitement about the improvements, urging residents to refrain from dumping waste into the canals.She encouraged community members to contact the municipality’s disaster hotline for assistance with litter collection when needed. The mayor emphasized the importance of collaboration between the municipality and residents, highlighting that working together is essential for creating a liveable city.
