A joint law enforcement operation between Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s Metro Police and Traffic Services over the weekend led to the arrest of a man in Sidwell who was found in possession on an unlicenced firearm and ammunition.
The operation which took place on Saturday, 12 October 2024, was focused on warrants of arrests in the area. NMBM Safety and Security Mayoral Committee Member, Cllr Stag Mitchell said the arrest was evidence of crime prevention when law enforcement officers take their services to communities.
“While the officers were busy with the warrants of arrests operation a concerned woman approached the officers stating she received a voice note from her son claiming someone wanted to shoot him, this was about 13:30pm on Saturday. The officers responded and members of the public alerted them to where the suspect was. A house search was conducted with consent from the owner of the house and the suspect was found. The police also found that the suspect has hidden the firearm into a toilet cistern,” MMC Mitchell said.The suspect was placed under arrest for being in unlawful possession of a Smith and Wesson Revolver and six rounds of ammunition and was detained at the Algoa Park Police Station.
“The joint efforts of our Metro Police and Traffic officials are commendable as they ensured that an unlicensed firearm and ammunition was taken off the streets. Members of the public are encouraged to report crimes to bring criminals to book,” added MMC Mitchell.
