Concert in the Park – Quick – Blankets and Picnic Stuff, Go, Go, Go

Its time to shake out your blankets and dust off the picnic baskets as Nelson Mandela Bay’s favourite outdoor classical concert is back for another magnificent show.

The Algoa FM Concert in the Park, presented by the East Cape Philharmonic orchestra, takes place on Saturday, 19 February at 5pm and on Sunday, 20 February at 10am at Victoria Park, Walmer.

In addition to enjoying the musical talent of the province’s top classical musicians in the East Cape Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by the charismatic Richard Cock, the audience can look forward to guest performances by the highly acclaimed saxophone player, Andrew Young, and singer, Timothy Moloi.

Algoa FM, in celebration of its 25 years in music, is supporting the event for the fifth consecutive year and is currently previewing the guest performers’ songs on their playlist, such as Young’s ‘Dying Young’ and ‘Whiter Shade of Pale’, and Moloi’s versions of ‘The way you look tonight’ and ‘That’s amore’.

British-born saxophonist, Andrew Young, has performed for audiences across the world including Germany, Austria, Turkey, China, and the Caribbean. South African audiences may know him by his 1994 album, Soul People, which was nominated five times at the SAMA awards and topped the South African charts twice.

Lending his vocal talents on stage is the celebrated Timothy Moloi whose local popularity it supported by the many large national events at which has recently performed. These include the SAMAs, the All Africa Games, the 2002 Earth Summit, Miss South Africa pageants, and the 2010 FIFA World Cup opening ceremony; as well as TV appearances on Morning Live and Noot vir Noot. Timothy’s smooth-as-velvet voice and masterful range earned him a double SAMA nomination for his 2009 album, Love That Music.

“This family-orientated event provides a high standard of musical talent in an amazing atmosphere under the Nelson Mandela Bay skies,” says Dave Tiltmann, Managing Director of Algoa FM. “This is a fitting event for 2011 when Algoa FM celebrates their 25 years of entertaining the Eastern Cape.”

Tickets will be available at the Victoria Park gates and cost R80 for adults, R60 for pensioners and R30 for scholars (pre-schoolers are free).
