Community Response Appreciated

15 November 2017 By NMB Communications

Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Member of the Mayoral Committee for Safety and Security, Cllr John Best, said the municipality is very appreciative of the cooperation by Bay residents following the notification by the South African Weather Service (SAWS) overnight.

“I would like to thank all citizens for heeding our proactive call, triggered by a very accurate warning from SAWS, on behalf of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, its political leadership and officials.

“Your immediate response, which was especially evident on our relatively deserted roads and minimal incidents last night, assisted our officials to respond efficiently.

“The South African Weather Service informed us this morning that we can expect another 10mm of rain during the day as the heavy rain subsided towards Port Alfred and beyond.

“Due to the persistent rain our officials will make a decision by 3pm whether or not to open the Third Avenue dip area in Newton Park.

“A number of relief efforts took place last night especially in areas such as Riemvasmaak, Qunu, Vastrap, Salt Lake and surrounding areas amongst others where Disaster Management officials in collaboration with councillors provide much assistance to residents adversely affected by flooded settlements,” MMC Best said.

Executive Director for Infrastructure, Electricity, Energy and Engineering, Dr Walter Shaidi, said the municipality is cautiously optimistic following the good rain in the catchment area as we are not out of the woods due to prevailing drought conditions.
