Just a day after their arrival in Nelson Mandela Bay, the newly acquired football club Chippa United will spend three days meeting its new fan base in the metro, making their presence felt and raising awareness about their friendly game against Kaizer Chiefs.
Before the Chiefs game scheduled for Sunday, 20 July 2014, the Chilli Boys are scheduled to play a practice match against second division side SUBS FC at Zwide stadium at 17:00 on Thursday, 17 July 2014 in a match opened to fans to come observe and cheer their new side up ahead of their ‘welcome home’ clash with Amakhosi. “Taking the team to the people is what will characterize our public relations activities in Port Elizabeth and surroundings. We believe that the people of the metro should have a sense of true ownership and truly identify with us from day 1 and in this fashion we will slowly write our name across their hearts” said Thabiso Shoes Mekuto, COO of Chippa United.
Friday, 18 July 2014, Nelson Mandela’s birthday, will be no exception to the Chilli Boys as they will take to Vuku Street New Brighton joining politicians, business, sports, media and cultural executives and celebrities dedicating 67 minutes of their time to do good works in the name of the late Nelson Mandela’ s campaign of social responsibility. After the Mandela Day involvement, the new Bay side will then proceed to Kwazakhele and Zwide via Daku and Njoli Roads and through Spondo Street they join the freeway to Uitenhage where they will be met by fans in Kwanobuhle, Langa and the Uitenhage CBD, before concluding their tour in Walmer.
“We believe the people of the metro need to see that the club is a responsible and caring corporate citizen of the metro, freely spending time with the poorest of the poor, when called upon to do so”, said Acting Executive Mayor, Councilor Chippa Ngcolomba.
Ngcolomba said it was important that all the people of the metro identify with the club, taking into consideration a lot of hard work that went into securing the professional side for them. He said there is nothing wrong with being seen to support two sides as many people still have their loyalties with other big teams from Gauteng and that they could hold dual memberships if needs be, although he was quick to say, in due course all people of the metro should have one membership which, is the Chippa United one.
The Chilli Boys will be at Pier 14 on Saturday, 19 July 2014 at 12:00 where supporters will meet players, have a chat and pose for pictures. He said this will be just about the most exciting moment as most shoppers irrespective of race and color converge in Pier 14 in huge numbers any day of the week.
The Chilli Boys play Kaizer Chiefs on Sunday, 20 July 2014 at 15:30 and tickets have started selling at R40 adults and R20 children age 12 and under. Tickets are sold at Computicket nationwide, Shoprite and Checkers, selected KFC outlets and at the stadium.
