Port Elizabeth will undoubtedly be the place of interest when it comes to the hosting of major chess events this year.
From 27 April 27 until 2 May the South African Masters and South African Ladies Open will attract the cream of the crop of chess to the Diaz Club in Newton Park, Port Elizabeth.
However, before the top brass of this inspirational game in the country hit the streets of Port Elizabeth, young chess players from six (6) to nineteen (19) years of age will get a chance on 2 April at the Kwezi Lomso Secondary School, Zwide to compete for a place in Eastern Province Development teams.
These teams will compete at the South African Junior Chess Championships (SAJCC) that will also be hosted on Nelson Mandela Bay soil in December.
According to Mr Winston Dalpat, Development Officer of the Eastern Province Chess Association, they are encouraging children from the age of six to nineteen years to participate in these trials in order to select the development teams to represent EP at the SAJCC.
The South African Junior Chess Championships (SAJCC) comprises 11 days of chess, in the most comprehensive chess tournament in the South African chess calendar. It is the biggest tournament, and unique since it consists of both team events and individual championships, covering age groups from under eight to under twenty.
The participants will come from 19 chess unions from all corners of South Africa. Up to 3 000 non players per day are expected, consisting mainly of parents, other family members, chess union managers, representatives and chess lovers.
