1.5 Meelion (and Counting)

20 February 2024 by Guest Leave a Comment

During the night shift on Monday 19 February, the production team of Volkswagen Group Africa celebrated a milestone when the 1,5-millionth vehicle built for export in Kariega rolled off the line.

The milestone vehicle, a Polo GTI destined for the United Kingdom, also marked the 21 165th vehicle built for export this year alone. The Kariega plant built 101 557 Polos for export last year. The plant’s record for export units in one year was in 2019, when the team built 108 422 vehicles for export markets.

Volkswagen Group Africa has been building vehicles for export since 1992, including models such as the Volkswagen Jetta and Golf. Currently the Kariega plant is the sole manufacturer of the Volkswagen Polo, exporting this vehicle to 38 markets worldwide. The plant has been building the current Polo since January 2018 and began production of the facelifted Polo in August 2021; it also produces the popular Polo Vivo for the South African market.

“Celebrating another production milestone this early in the year sets the tone for a successful 2024,” said Ulrich Schwabe, Volkswagen Group Africa Production Director. “Volkswagen Group Africa remains a strong player in the export space and I am proud of the team behind milestones such as these. As the home of Polo we intend to continue building and delivering our high-quality vehicles to customers around the world – and hopefully achieve many more milestones along the way.”

Algoa FM commits to Buffalo City with new shows and more

19 February 2024 by Guest Leave a Comment

EAST LONDON – Algoa FM has renewed its lease agreement with Hemingways Casino, which will continue to house the radio station’s Buffalo City operation.

Further investment into Algoa FM’s East London operation will take the form of technology upgrades and an update to the look and feel of the studio.

“So much more than a contractual relationship, this agreement signifies a renewal of vows between the team at Hemingways and ourselves,” says Algoa FM Managing Director, Alfie Jay.

The radio station has been an anchor tenant at Hemingways since 2011.

The renewal of the lease is part of Algoa FM’s commitment to support economic growth and social cohesion in the region.
“The scope of our footprint and the services we offer to companies of all sizes in the region are broad.

“Our renewed investment into Buffalo City provides our local team with the resources needed to ensure that we can thrive in difficult market conditions and build on our commitment to support economic growth and social cohesion in the region.

“Our planning around this, and the strategies we are rolling out to ensure that we’re addressing these risks, include more emphasis into the region and our brand,” says Jay.

“Our performance in the Eastern Cape and Garden Route reflects the continued investments we have made over time.

“These include the premises we built in Nelson Mandela Bay and the launch of our Garden Route HQ in George, all commissioned with a view to improving service to our stakeholders.”

Algoa FM recently committed to a new ethos in which the value proposition of the business benefits people, including its staff, audience, clients, communities, its shareholders and other stakeholders.

“It’s the most sustainable way to build long-term value,” says Jay.

Aside from the news that Algoa FM will be renewing its vows with Hemingways Casino and that the radio station will be investing in upgrades to its East London operation, Jay also announced the welcomed return of Gordon Graham to the afternoon drive show, effective 4 March 2024.

This follows the departure of Vinny Nogemane earlier this month.

“My family and I have been discussing a return to East London for a while now,” says the former, popular drivetime host, Gordon Graham.

“We’ve spent about nine years in KZN and although it’s been a blast, home is where the heart is and I can’t wait to once again engage with listeners and clients alike,” says Graham.

Reinforcing the station’s commitment to the people in the region, Algoa FM will also be introducing a new show featuring Jeff Moloi, who is also returning to the station. Commencing Sunday the 3rd of March, Breakfast will be hosted live from Hemingways by the broadcast lecturer from Walter Sisulu University.

“I’m really looking forward to reconnecting with the listeners and my former colleagues,” says Moloi, who some years ago presented the early evening show on the station.

“We are as committed to the eastern half of our broadcast footprint as we are to the west, and the announcements made today, are testimony to our passion for the people of Buffalo City and Algoa Country as a whole,” says Jay.

Two clusters appoint chairpersons to foster positive developments within the areas

15 February 2024 by Guest Leave a Comment

The recent appointments of Tati Tsunke and Geoff Mendelowitz as chairpersons for the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber’s Beachfront Cluster and North End Cluster, respectively, reflect the momentum the clusters are building as they drive for a more enabling operating environment.

Effective and positive leadership is crucial for encouraging collaboration of the various businesses and stakeholders, as well as drive the adoption of a solutions and action orientated approach, says Denise van Huyssteen, CEO of the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber

The Chamber has over the past 18 months successfully established eight clusters namely Neave/Korsten, North End, Deal Party, Beachfront, Baakens Valley, Struandale, Kariega and Perseverance, each actively collaborating with the Municipality and other stakeholders to address common issues in their geographic areas. “We envisage that two more clusters will come on stream in the coming months, and are expected to be located in the Fairview and Walmer areas. This demonstrates that the mobilisation of businesses around the Bay is accelerating as more businesses realise they need to become more actively involved in such initiatives to help retain and grow investment and jobs.”

Tati Tsunke, the general manager of the Boardwalk Hotel and Casino, will lead the Beachfront Cluster, replacing Mike Neubert who has stepped into the Treasurer role. Tsunke has been instrumental in enlisting businesses in the area to address issues like cleanliness, street lighting and the installation of security cameras to enhance safety in the beachfront area.

Geoff Mendelowitz, the Project and Property Maintenance Manager for Grindstone Property Group, replaces James Flanagan in leading the North End Cluster. Both Tsunke and Mendelowitz bring valuable leadership experience to their roles, and their professional insight is expected to guide the clusters through collaborative efforts focused on action and results.

Tsunke emphasised the critical timing of his appointment, recognising the challenges businesses face in a changed environment. He highlighted the positive impact of partnerships among businesses in addressing issues in the beachfront area.

“I do not take this honour lightly as I understand the major task that lies ahead in terms of strengthening the cluster to become responsive to the challenges facing businesses and other stakeholders in the beachfront area. Businesses operating in the precinct have made positive strides in addressing some of the problems that negatively impact businesses and their operations, including strengthening security for the safety of both businesses and visitors in the beachfront,” said Tsunke.

Mendelowitz, a Civil Engineer with 40 years’ experience in management, stressed the importance of decisive leadership and collaboration with all stakeholders in addressing numerous challenges in North End and the wider city.
“My priority is to continue with the North End Cluster’s mandate by working constructively with the Business Chamber Executive as well as both public and private stakeholders. This will ensure success for a well maintained, sustainable and thriving Cluster as part of an exciting wider Business Chamber initiative,” said Mendelowitz.
Van Huyssteen said the appointments reaffirmed the importance of positive activism from businesses in response to the radically changed economic environment.

“We have full confidence in the capabilities of both appointees as they have deep insight into the challenges facing businesses in their respective areas. What the city needs now are innovative leaders who are not bogged down by the negativity around them but rather utilising the power of collective leadership to find solutions to retain and attract investment in the Metro. We’re looking forward to working with them and hope that they will embrace the challenges and help build hope through unity of purpose and action,” she said.

13 February 2024 by Guest Leave a Comment

On Friday, 09 February 2024, the Coega Development Corporation (Coega) hosted a certificate handover ceremony for its 2023 Maths and Science (MSP) Programme Top Achievers.

The celebration, which took place at the Bluewater Bay Sunrise Hotel (BWBSH), was attended by the top 11 learners from the 2023 academic year, programme facilitators, parents, and stakeholders, including the Eastern Cape Department of Education and the Eastern Cape Socio Economic Consultative Council.

The certificate handover ceremony also marked a second consecutive 100% pass rate for the Coega MSP, which resides in Coega’s Corporate Services Business Unit and offers matriculants a second chance to improve their grade 12 Mathematics and Physical Science results.

The MSP Class of 2023 produced ten (10) distinctions in Mathematics. Thirty- three (33) learners excelled with above 70% in Mathematics, and eleven (11) achieved above 70% in Physical Science. One of the biggest improvements recorded in Mathematics was an increase from 31% to 72%, and one of the biggest improvements in Physical Science was from 39% to 77%, shared Mr. Eldon September, who has been a facilitator for the past 10 years. Together, the Coega MSP team has achieved exceptional results, with close to 1,000 learners successfully exiting the programme.

Mr. Ernest Gorgonzola, District Director of Education for the Nelson Mandela Bay region, expressed his appreciation to Coega: “Thank you to the Coega Development Corporation. We need to work more closely to capitalise on the expertise in this Programme. The Coega Development Corporation contributed to the improvement of Mathematics and Physical Science results of the Nelson Mandela Bay district and Eastern Cape as a whole,” said Gorgonzola.

The Coega MSP, a Corporate Social Investment Programme, aligns with Coega’s commitment to promoting education and skills development within communities, in line with Coega’s vision of being a leading catalyst for the championing of socio- economic development.

Ms. Nontembeko Tom, Subject Planner for the Eastern Cape Department of Education expressed a sense of pride on behalf of the Department and all role- players: “Your dedication to education and nurturing the minds of our learners is truly commendable. To the learners, you are the heart of this Programme. Thank you for inspiring us and reminding us of the true purpose of our work.”

The Coega MSP enables learners to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). With the help of the MSP, thousands of learners have been able to secure admission to their preferred tertiary institutions and excel in their careers.

The top learner from the Coega MSP Class of 2023 and future Engineer, Ms. Limpho Fadane, who achieved 86% in Mathematics and 77% in Physical Science, addressed attendees with a word of encouragement: “This is a very auspicious moment for me as this was not an easy journey. Always remember that there is nothing worthwhile without hard work. Let’s begin the next journey of our lives.”

As the organisation looks ahead, Coega anticipates the enhancement of the MSP by introducing technology, upskilling, coaching, and mentoring for facilitators and administrators.

Over the next five years, the envisaged plan includes expanding beneficiaries from 100 to 500, reinforcing Coega’s commitment to nurturing a new generation of STEM professionals. The past week also marked the commencement of classes for the 97 learners enrolled in the 2024 Coega MSP, some of whom look forward to receiving their Top Achiever certificate at next year’s ceremony.

Coega’s Executive Manager for Corporate Services, Ms. Mokgaetši Sebothoma, wished the learners well in their journey ahead: “We wish you the best of luck with your future careers which promise to be bright; and remember, it’s about lifelong learning, perseverance, and grit. These are some of the qualities that will ensure that you can be your very best and positively impact those around you.”

VWA aim to be carbon neutral by 2030

12 February 2024 by Guest Leave a Comment

Aligning with the priorities of the Volkswagen brand worldwide, Volkswagen Group Africa (VWA) has set its sights on an ambitious goal: for its Kariega plant to become a carbon neutral production plant by 2030.

VWA is already well on their way to achieving this, putting environmental sustainability first through a range of projects being implemented at its Kariega plant, as well as its sites in Sandton and Centurion.

Under the umbrella of their Zero Impact Factory programme, VWA has placed its focus on biodiversity, clean energy, efficient resource management and waste reduction, to name a few.

Notably, VWA has installed solar photovoltaic panels at its sites capable of generating 4 488 MWh of electricity annually, with R34 million invested to date. Additionally, solar panels installed at the employee car park for the Kariega plant will be added to this from September 2024, accounting for an additional investment of R55 million and a further 4 500 MWh in generation capacity.

In terms of water consumption, VWA has installed rainwater harvesting tanks capable of storing 1,2 million litres of rainwater, for use in various Production areas. This is in addition to the wastewater recycling facility VWA built on-site in 2021, which has the capacity to reduce the plant’s use of freshwater in Production by 26%.

Meanwhile, the company’s waste reduction initiatives have delivered impressive results, with a 5% reduction in landfill waste in 2023. VWA has reduced its cardboard box waste by 17 tonnes and its plastic waste by 46 tonnes in 2022 and 2023. The company also continues its efforts to promote biodiversity through projects such as spekboom planting and the removal of invasive alien plant species at its Kariega sites.

Through all these and other projects, VWA has already reduced its environmental impact by 57% compared to the baseline measured in 2010.

This includes reductions of:

  • 56% in energy usage
  • 53% in CO₂ emissions
  • 73% in use of freshwater
  • 76% in waste

The company was also recognised for its environmental sustainability efforts in 2023, garnering the international Lean & Green Management Award, as well as the SJM Flex Environmental Award at the local Exporter of the Year awards.

“With these results, VWA is synonymous with environmental sustainability,” said Ulrich Schwabe, VWA Production Director. “We remain committed to minimising our environmental impact on all possible aspects of our operations, and the results speak for themselves. I am grateful to every employee who has contributed to these achievements. As VWA we will continue building on the good work that has already been done by our teams and pave the way to our carbon neutral future.”

Coega Joins Department of Education for Nkululeko School Handover

11 February 2024 by Guest Leave a Comment

On Friday, 09 February 2024, Coega was pleased to support the official handover of the Nkululeko Senior Secondary School (SSS) to the community of KwaNobuhle by the Eastern Cape Department of Education. The Nkululeko SSS, which falls under the Department’s School Building Programme, involved the renovation and upgrade of an existing public school facility in the Nelson Mandela Municipality of the Eastern Cape.

The Premier of the Eastern Cape, Honourable Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane, who officially opened the school, explained that the month of February has been dedicated to opening the schools that have been built across the province. “This project has been facilitated by Coega, the best performing SEZ in the country. In deep rural areas, you will see state-of- the art schools. When we put this infrastructure in place, we are inspiring these communities. We have taken this school to another level, including science and computer labs and sport fields. If you invest in education, you can never go wrong,” said Premier Mabuyane.

Coega serves as an Implementing Agent (IA) of Choice on an assortment of school projects, including new schools, improvements, and additions to existing schools, as well as repairs and renovations to various schools, in alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development (SDG) Goal 4, which is about “ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all.”

The project, millions of rands in value, incorporates a new administration block with staff ablutions, a total of 27 standard classrooms, 11 single-story building blocks, four specialist classrooms including a library, multipurpose and science laboratory, learner ablutions distributed in two blocks, support and ancillary facilities comprising a nutrition centre, tuck-shop, caretaker room, security gatehouse, and refuse yard.

Ms. Thembeka Poswa, Coega Programme Director, said that the improvement of learning environments will result in improved outcomes for the learners and the community.

“Coega was very lucky to be appointed as the Implementing Agent on this project. The completion of Nkululeko plays a significant role in improving the potential of all learners in the Eastern Cape, as education is one of the most essential pillars upon which an equitable, inclusive, and developmental society is established,” said Poswa.

In addition to the new infrastructure, the project included the establishment of 5000l rainwater storage tanks, an elevated water storage tank, paved and grassed assembly areas, drinking fountains, concrete seating benches, soft and hard landscaping, a covered storm water drainage system, water and sewer reticulation, electricity supply, and perimeter security fencing for the whole site. The pre-existing school building facilities, located on the northern portion of the site, measuring approximately 2500m2 area and 3500 mm high are set to be demolished.

Nkululeko Grade 11 learner, Awonke Pawu, expressed his excitement immediately after the opening ceremony: “I’ve been a learner here for many years, and last year, we were told that we would have a new school. I feel alive and excited because the promise was kept.”

In terms of socio-economic development imperatives, the project provided employment to 29 local workers, two built environment interns, and 13 SMME contractors. Coega strives to continue enhancing the educational outcomes and increasing accessibility, particularly in rural areas, where there is a lack of basic amenities like adequate learning environments, essential teaching tools, electricity, water, and sanitary facilities.

“Coega’s work as a Trusted Implementing Agent of Choice in South Africa enables us to execute our vision to be a leading catalyst for the championing of socio-economic development through the provision of educational facilities and the creation of jobs within local communities,” concluded Poswa.

Celebrating the Chinese Year of the Dragon for strength, energy and vitality as the Boardwalk Casino dazzles Chinese honouree guests with dragon dance line-up.

This past weekend, Boardwalk Casino played host to a colourful spectacle as they celebrated the upcoming Chinese New Year, the Year of the Dragon, considered to be a symbol of strength, energy and vitality.

The honouree guests, which included Larry Pow Chong, Chairman of Chinese Community, were dazzled by the dragon dance performed by the Shun Wu Tang Martial Arts Academy.

Set against a backdrop of beating drums and clashing cymbals, the dragon dance serves as an effective deterrent against evil spirits and a harbinger of good fortune.

Most Valued Guest (MVG) members received a gift on arrival at Kipling’s Brasserie before being greeted by a traditional dragon dance and dining on Chinese cuisine. Closing off a lively evening, eight guests walked away with prizes totalling R24,000 in a lucky draw.

In addition to the dragon dance performed by the academy, guests were also treated to a live music duet.

“Every year, we pull out all the stops for our Chinese community to see in the New Year and to create lasting memories together,” says Boardwalk General Manager, Tsunke Tati. “We wish all our guests celebrating the Chinese New Year happiness and prosperity.”

“The merrymaking at Boardwalk welcomed in a new lunar year, but was also an opportunity to honour and sustain the wonderful relationship between Sun International and the Chinese community,” Tati said.

STEM Programmes Shape A Brighter Future For South Africa

8 February 2024 by Guest Leave a Comment

The Coega Development Corporation’s (Coega) approach to skills development and training recognises the pivotal role of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) expertise as a catalyst for achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. STEM fields are acknowledged as major innovation drivers, offering solutions to contemporary issues in sustainable development, equitable growth, and social well-being.

Coega has formally pledged its support to the advancement of STEM, through the facilitation and endorsement of skills development and training initiatives, and infrastructure development programmes that embody a spirit of hope and continuous improvement. In so doing, Coega contributes to a more sustainable and innovation-driven South Africa, as well as access to opportunities to historically disadvantaged communities, with a focus on women and youth.

Coega stands resolute in its contribution to education, by, amongst others, offering a second chance to learners hoping to pursue STEM careers.

In fact, this week marked the commencement of the Coega Maths and Science Programme (MSP) Class of 2024’s academic journey to improve their matric Mathematics and Physical Science results, with 97 learners entering the programme. The Coega MSP is a fully funded initiative that offers matriculants an opportunity to enhance their Grade 12 Mathematics and Physical Science results, thereby improving the likelihood of university admission to study their preferred STEM courses.

With a consecutive 100% pass rate, the Coega MSP exposes learners to an intensive teaching programme aimed at closing the learning gaps that students may have experienced in their matric year.

Another prime example of Coega’s work in the advancement of STEM, is the Coega Skills Development Centre (SDC). The Coega SDC serves as a catalyst for mitigating socio- economic challenges by providing vocational training that is essential for securing employment across diverse industries. The SDC recently applied to the Quality Council for Trade and Occupations (QCTO) to offer a credit bearing and nationally recognised skills programme for Renewable Energy Workshop Assistant.

The Coega Global Scholars Programme (CGSP) further contributes to socio-economic transformation by enabling postgraduate (Masters) training for current and future management talent, funding their courses at top-tier global universities specialising in STEM and related interdisciplinary studies. Currently, two Coega Global Scholars Programme (CGSP) candidates are in their 10th month of studying towards Master’s Degrees in Electrical Engineering and Urban Agglomeration, respectively.

Coega also provides STEM-related internships as part of its overarching Internship Programme. The Coega Internship Programme offers graduates real-world exposure to careers in Finance, Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), and Engineering through its various business units, to name a few.

Coega’s dedication to STEM education extends to school infrastructure development and support. Most notably, the construction of the Anton Lembede Mathematics, Sciences, and Technology: School of Innovation and Leadership Academy, for which Coega was appointed as the Implementing Agent, inclusive of the provisioning of ICT infrastructure. This project was aligned to South Africa’s National Development Plan (NDP Vision 2030) and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4), which focuses on ensuring “inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.” Through a hybrid teaching model, blending online and offline methods, the Anton Lembede Mathematics, Sciences, and Technology: School of Innovation and Leadership Academy offers inclusive access to quality education, while preparing students for the digital age.

Coega acknowledges that STEM fields present innovative methods and solutions to current and evolving issues, including sustainable development, equitable growth, and social well-being. For this reason, Coega’s training initiatives have been conceptualised to not only support the professional growth of individuals, but also the broader societal goals outlined in development frameworks issued by national government, such as the National Development Plan Vision 2030.

In conclusion, Coega’s commitment to education, skills development and training will shape a brighter future for South Africa, where STEM education serves as a cornerstone for sustainable development, innovation, and societal progress.
