The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality would like to warn beachgoers to strictly adhere to the instructions of lifeguards at the southern beaches as bluebottles are drifting towards Hobie, Humewood and Kings Beach at this stage.
A member of the NSRI was stung in the neck by a Bluebottle while exercising at Pollok Beach shortly before 11:00 am this morning.
Please do exercise extreme care as it can be extremely uncomfortable if you get stung.
According to Health24, the following steps must be implemented if you get stung by a jellyfish or bluebottle:
- Immediately rinse the affected area of skin with sea water before attempting to remove the tentacles. Do not rinse with fresh water or rub the area.
- Cover your hands and gently remove any tentacles.
- Rinse the area with vinegar or apply baking soda paste or a meat tenderizer-water combination paste.
- Pain can be treated with topical anaesthetic creams or calamine lotion. Also try immersing the affected part in water as hot as can be tolerated with a pinch of salt for 30 minutes.
Editor’s Note: If none of the above are available find someone with a full bladder as urine on the sting can help.
