Nelson Mandela Bay came together in aid of the Abdullah family from Salt Lake following a devastating fire that engulfed all their belongings and caused immense difficulty for the inhabitants of 28 Freeman Street.
Visitors to the house including Executive Mayor Dr Danny Jordaan, followed by the municipality’s Rapid Response Task Team (RRTT) expressed shock at the level of destruction and the abhorrent loss of property by the four adults and four children living there.
Mr Zonile Ndoni, Coordinator of the RRTT – a unit that works closely with other spheres of government to provide collective answers to difficult situations like this, said he was instructed by Mayor Jordaan to assist the family in their hour of need.
“Clothing, blankets and toiletry from the Executive Mayor’s Office, four mattresses and blankets from our Disaster Management were provided.
“Our Waste Management Directorate assisted with the removal of rubble from the burnt house and a group of community leaders – who declined to be named – donated shoes and clothing for the family.
“Dr Jordaan expressed appreciation for the swift response from my team and other departments such as South African Social Security Agency (Sassa), Home Affairs and the Community Chest,” Ndoni said.
Sassa replaced four damaged cards and Home Affairs assisted with four birth certificates and four temporary ID documents as well.
A local cleric Mr Dawood Niekerk committed to help find solutions for the family.
