The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality is immensely proud of three of its firefighters who will be competing in the World Firefighter Games in Aalborg, Denmark from Saturday, 7 September.
The brothers duo, Alton and Riaan Senekal, and Roland Jerling will show their mettle in the weeklong championship where approximately 6 000 firefighters from across the world will be competing in over 50 events.
Executive Mayor Gary van Niekerk wished them well and said he is confident that they will fly the South African flag high.
“The tenacity of these men to continuously sharpen their skills by competing against the best in the world, beyond the stringent demands of their jobs, is a reflection of their dedication to their profession.
“Besides risking their lives to serve our communities, they are also in top physical condition to represent our country well.
“I wish them all the best and will be holding thumbs that they will be bringing back heaps of medals.
“I want to remind them that when the going gets tough, they should find courage in the fact that: ‘Hulle weet nie wat ons weet nie’,” said Mayor Van Niekerk.
Alton and Riaan Senekal are both station commanders at the Kwanobuhle Fire Station and Roland Jerling is a senior firefighter at the South End Fire Station.
