Bay Councillors and Communications team thrash out issues

17 November 2016 By NMB Communications

Communications Officials, GCIS officials and Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Councillors thrashed out pertinent issues relating to the communications environment during a frank session at the Woolboard Exchange today.

The inner workings of the only government-led social network in the world, GovChat, enjoyed centre stage to allow politicians the opportunity to see how they can connect with residents in their wards regarding service delivery and governance issues.

The Municipality’s interactive website, social media and media presentations by Nkqubela FM and Bay TV further made up the interactive and informative programme.
Pertaining to social media, Speaker of Council, Cllr Jonathan Lawack, put the day in perspective with an apt analogy of a vehicle.

“Your red 1962 Volkswagen Beetle could have been the best car back in the day, but today it is unfortunately not the case. Things have changed.

“Listen attentively so that you can do your job even better as a Councillor in order to provide better services to the people,” Lawack reminded his peers.

The session, led by the Communications Office in collaboration with the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS), was arranged to bring the politicians and municipal management on par with new developments in media and communications.

Deputy Executive Mayor Mongameli Bobani thanked the Communications Office.

“GovChat is an important tool that will help the municipality as it enables interactive communication with our constituencies as communities are already using social networks to air their views and concerns,” Deputy Executive Mayor Bobani said.

Discussions regarding media interviews led to a few chuckles as a mock radio interview took place to enable the political leaders to be better equipped when dealing with the media.

GovChat (www.govchat.org.za) allows residents to connect with their Ward Councillors and to post pictures and videos on the portal.
