The RYC 24 Hour Challenge joins the original South African 24 Hour Challenge, hosted annual by the Milnerton Aquatic Club since March 1988.
The MAC 24 Hour Challenge was born out of the grand daddy of such challenges – the 24 hour challenge hosted by the West Lancashire Yacht Club in Southport, UK which has been sailed annually since 1967 – at times with up to 100 team entries. It is a distance, two man, dinghy race and the world record was achieved in 1997 of 253.94 km sailed in 24 hours in a GP14 dinghy and was again equalled in 2001 in an Enterprise dinghy.
Some other 24 Hour Sailing Records include:
- Largest Sailing Race in the World: The largest sailing race in 24 hours is Bart’s Bash which involved 9,484 boats at 237 locations worldwide and was organised by the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation, in multiple venues around the world, on 21 September 2014.
