Alleged Riotous Drunk Driver Wounded in the ….

A drunk 42-year-old man is in a stable condition in hospital following a pursuit by Metro Police – first in his vehicle and later on foot at approximately 03:30 this morning.

Acting Metro Police Chief Andrew Moses said Metro Police officers first noticed a grey car in Sydenham dangerously weaving left to right and speeding through three red traffic lights.

“Our officers immediately started chasing the vehicle as the driver was endangering the lives of other road users and potentially could have been fleeing after committing a crime elsewhere.

“The man refused to stop and perilously drove on the wrong side of Uitenhage road facing oncoming traffic.

“At the corner of Spondo and Uitenhage Road in the vicinity of Kenako Mall, two of our patrol vehicles managed to bring the riotous driver to a stop by boxing him in. One vehicle was at the back of the suspect’s car and the other stopped him from driving any further.

“While in pursuit the man pointed an object in the direction of our officers and out of concern for the safety of the public and themselves, a shot was fired. He was wounded in his right buttock in the process.

“The suspect was first taken to the Dora Nginza Hospital where it was determined that his injury is not life threatening. He was then transferred to Livingstone Hospital for further treatment.

“I would like to commend the officers for containing the situation at all cost – especially since they put their own lives on the line for the common good,” Moses said.

The matter has been reported to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) as procedurally required. The South African Police Service is also investigating.
