These remarks were made by the Executive Mayor of Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, Councillor Athol Trollip, at the Woolboard Exchange today after the approval of the adjustments to the City’s 2016/17 Medium-Term Revenue and Expenditure Framework.
The 2016/2017 adjustment budget for Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality received a resounding approval during a Council meeting today, 23 February 2017, marking an important milestone for the municipality as it works towards strengthening the its financial backbone to be able to deliver quality services to its citizenry.
Executive Mayor Athol Trollip emphasised his commendation of the Finance Minister, Pravin Gordan MP, on treating Nelson Mandela Bay fairly in the National 2017 Budget.
But we cannot allow another reduction of EPWP funding from National Treasury due to underutilisation, as was the case with the previous administration. This new DA-led administration is committed to spending all equitable share funding fairly and productively to ensure maximum benefit to our residents.
“Our adjustment budget is very important for us especially in the context of what transpired in parliament during the budget speech. Obviously there was trepidation on our part as we were not sure what our equitable share would be. Our equitable share has grown and our grant funding has increased especially for areas we were concerned about such as the IPTS and the Nootgedacht Water Scheme.”
“Our adjustment budget seeks to put the people of Nelson Mandela Bay first and we remain committed to bettering their lives and to developing this city through improved service delivery and economic growth,” Mayor Trollip said.
The municipality has over the last six months managed to strengthen its financial management systems and the approval of the adjusted budget will go a long way in speeding up the provision of basic services in the Metro.
We are a government at work, taking Nelson Mandela Bay forward one day at a time.
