7 October 2021 By Alan Straton

The 2021 International Laser Class sailed their National Championships in Algoa Bay, Gqeberha from 1 to 4 October 2021.

Hosted by the Redhouse Yacht Club and Sailing PE the 54 entrants sailed 10 races over three days with Saturday being blown out.

2021 Laser Nationals
The Algoa Bay Weather Didn’t disappoint Laser Sailors contesting the 2021 Laser Nationals from 1 to 4 OCtober 2021.

There were 16 entries in the ILCA 4 CLASS (4.7), 23 in the ILCA 6 CLASS (Radial) and 15 in the ILCA 6 CLASS (Full).

Sailors travelled to Gqeberha from Cape Town, Mossel Bay, Knysna, Durban, East London and Johannesburg.

A hard days sailing on Friday saw a number of breakages and more than one or two tired sailors. Three were returned to the Port of Port Elizabeth suffering from hypothermia and exhaustion.

Saturday was a blown out day with the West wind hitting near gale force.

An early start on Sunday offered steady East South East Conditions and exciting sailing.

Monday’s sailing was more of a challenge for the race committee as they chased a shifting wind and course to complete 4 races for the day in shifty conditions. One race had to be abandoned but all four were completed before the cut off time of 3:00 pm.
