YouTube Shorts Videos: When Frivolous BEATS Serious

On Wednesday I spent most of the day in the presence of more than 100 intelligent, powerful women who had gathered together for the 2023 Imbokodo Awards for Women in the Maritime Environment. Hosted by SAIMI the topics at the conference were challenging, interesting and highlighted the progress made by women in certain sections of the industry which has been dominated by ‘pale males’ for centuries.

The awards evening was held at the Radisson Blu in Summerstrand, Gqeberha and in the lead up to the start of the proceedings I filmed a few YouTube Shorts – some frivolous and some serious.

Now, for those seeking massive exposure on YouTube and constantly in pursuit of a ‘viral video’ you would do well to take heed of the results of my experiment.

12 hours after publishing 4 YouTube Shorts these are the viewing results:

  1. Roch-Lè Bloem Takes a Spin Standing Still – 2,571 views
  2. Just how did they do that? – 2,089 views
  3. The Band With No Name – 149 views
  4. Imbokodo Awards Evening at the Radisson Blu in Gqeberha – 31 views

And what can I conclude from the above?

  1. Showcasing a well known public figure with a strange activity makes people stop and view (frivolous video)
  2. Posing a question juxtaposed with a strange thumbnail makes people stop and watch (frivolous video)
  3. Using a well known saying in a different context doesn’t seem to resonate (semi serious video)
  4. Being serious and ‘reporting’ was a bt of a flop (serious video)
