Woody Cape MTB Challenge in Cold and Wet Conditions

7 May 2011 By Alan Straton

The Woody Cape’s inaugural Mountain Bike Challenge on Saturday 7 May saw just under 100 participants taking part and enjoying the new course in cold and wet conditions. As a result of overnight rains, organisers shortened the long course Mountain Bike course to 45km which saw Christiaan Steffens and his father Ferdi dominating the race from the start. A tough and technical course greeted the cyclists as soon as they left Alexandria and headed through the Dairy farmlands before heading into the Sanparks forest.

“The rain made conditions a lot more testing than we had anticipated, but the cyclists loved the course and were very happy that it had been shortened.” said race organiser Mike Zoetmulder of Zports.

Shane Darcy claimed 3rd place in the long course with Misty Weyer winning the gold medal in the ladies category from Carol Bernard and Tracy Meyer. In the 25km race was won by Auret Labuschagne from Doug Cuppleditch and Christo Pienaar with Kerry Longhurst winning the ladies race from Amanda Benade and Mariechen Vorster.

A fun 10km MTB race was also held for the novice cyclists with Deon Esterhuisen and Melissa Taylor winning whilst Nicolette Brouwer and Warren Heard won the 10km trail run.

Full results from the Woody Cape MTB Challenge can be found on www.WoodyCapeMTB.co.za. Cyclists now prepare for the Kenton Xtreme Eco Challenge which will be held at Kenton-on-Sea at the end of the month. Entries are already open on www.kentonxtreme.co.za.
