Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University’s popular Accounting winter school for Grade 12s takes place once again this year – but with one major change: It will also include a week of Maths.
Now called the “AccMaths” school, the Accounting component will run from July 7 to 12, with the Maths component following from July 14 to 18.
The Grade 12 Accounting and Mathematics curricula will be covered in the intensive two-week programme, sponsored by Deloitte, which typically attracts more than 500 pupils from across the Eastern and Southern Cape.
A three-day Accounting school for Grade 11s will also take place in the mid-year break – running from July 1 to 3.
Why do you want to be an accountant? The video below receives quite a lot of airplay in the house of Straton as Philip is doing his Honours in Accounting at NMMU and will play this video given any excuse.
But back to real life ………..
Ansulene Prinsloo, NMMU Accounting 1 lecturer and coordinator of both the Grade 11 and 12 schools, said: “The main aim of the AccMaths school is to help Grade 12s obtain higher Admission Points Scores (APS), which is their entrance ticket to higher education.
“We have added the week of Mathematics for the Grade 12s this year as we realized from experience that most pupils also struggle with this subject – which is also a key admission requirement for many university programmes. However, the Maths week will only be available to those pupils who attend the Accounting week as well.” Over a third of the pupils who attended last year’s winter school are now students at NMMU.
Andisile Mdatyulwa, a first-year BCom (Chartered Accounting) student, said last year’s Grade 12 winter school helped him to understand Accounting and was also the catalyst for his pursuing a career in Accounting. “Before the school, I wasn’t anticipating a career in Accounting, but the experience made me consider this field … I was particularly motivated by hearing the Vice-Chancellor’s Scholars (the university’s top students) talking about their experiences in studying Accounting.”
Jessica Chemaly, who is also studying BCom (Chartered Accounting), said the winter school “covered a week of school Accounting in an hour”. “I didn’t know I had the capacity to take in as much I did.” She used the extensive material provided at the winter school to help prepare for her finals.
Roxanne Weiss, who was last year studying Accounting as an eighth subject, without a teacher, said the school helped her to pass the subject with distinction. She is also a recipient of the prestigious Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship (worth R75 600 per year) awarded to top-performing matriculants for the duration of their undergraduate studies at NMMU, provided they achieve outstanding marks year on year.
Siphesihle Nani, also studying BCom (Chartered Accounting), said her improved understanding of Accounting meant she could work more quickly through her tests and exams. “I was able to finish my Accounting tests for the first time, and my marks also improved during exams.”
This year’s fortnight-long programme will be taught using the School of Accounting’s teaching model – which includes a combination of lectures, tutorial classes and homework – thus giving the pupils a taste of university academics.
Attendees will also receive career and bursary information – and will be taught how to apply to university.
In addition to providing funding to cover the operating costs of the AccMaths school, Deloitte is also donating files for every attendee, as well as 60 lucky draw prizes. There will also be prizes for the top three participants as well as the most improved pupil. These include a Samsung Galaxy Tablet and gift vouchers worth R1000, R500 and R350.
The three-day Grade 11 Accounting school, sponsored by PwC, covers the four main topics of the Grade 11 Accounting curriculum. “These are all topics that pupils will continue studying in grade 12. The foundation of Grade 11 is so important – if this foundation is not solid enough, they are going to battle in Grade 12,” said Prinsloo. “Pupils also don’t realize the importance of their Grade 11 marks – these also have to be sent in with their forms when applying to study at a university.”
Attendance for the AccMaths school costs R60 per attendee per week, and the Grade 11 Accounting School costs R60 per attendee. To book your place, contact Suzanne Vermeulen on 041 504 2620 or email suzanne.vermeulen2@nmmu.ac.za.
