This Saturday (24 October) marks the 10th and final Parkrun in which students from Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University’s PinnAcle Leadership Programme (PLP) – for top performers in the School of Accounting – will be participating, as part of their “10 runs for 10 years” creative leadership project.
The runs have marked the 10-year milestone celebrated by NMMU this year, but the students have also run for and actively marketed 10 different causes, ranging from saying “no” to xenophobia, to drawing attention to Vice-Chancellor Prof Derrick Swartz’s Mount Fuji fundraising climb in August (for which they raised R20,000 themselves), to supporting Lukhanyiso Children’s Home (pictured here, with children from Lukhanyiso also joining in).
The final run, which comes just weeks before final university exams, is aimed at encouraging students to prepare both body and mind for this high-pressure time. Participating in Parkrun has presented an opportunity for the university’s 80 top accounting students – who make up the PinnAcle group – to be part of a global running phenomenon that actively promotes grassroots sports participation and to engage with the local community and the scores of NMMU staff, students and alumni, who ran alongside them
Parkrun is a free 5km event that takes place every Saturday in about 10 countries countrywide.
