In celebration of Madiba’s 94th birthday the Uitenhage based Goodyear tyre factory stopped production where possible early this morning, to enable its employees to sing happy birthday to Nelson Mandela.
“About 250 people volunteered and sang out loud, which created a wonderful atmosphere at the plant. Goodyear donated R10 for every person who sang to the Steven Nkomo School in Kwanobuhle” said Lize Hayward (Goodyear Group Brand Communications Manager).
“The company then transported three groups of volunteering employees at hourly intervals to the Oosterland Youth Centre in Despatch, an organisation with whom Goodyear has a longstanding supportive relationship. They celebrated a birthday party with 18 of its children between the ages of four and six years old.
“They also handed over personal donations of stationary, toiletries, clothing, linen and blankets to the Centre.”
