We need strong Leadership NOW!

11 May 2020 By Alan Straton

I was asked a question today about what is really happening in South Africa. In light of the arrests of surfers, harassing of pensioners, fining of boaters, Arresting of people standing and what appears to be a backlash against ordinary and more privileged citizens trying to go about their daily routine.

It is quite simple – the people that we follow on Social Media are mostly white or privileged and able to shout about their injustice. I am always trying to get some balance by feedback from people in the townships. Remember the first images and reports out of South Africa where all about the people in the townships being persecuted. Now the focus has changed to persecution of whites or privileged people.

Also – the SAPS is a NATIONAL organisation that listens to NATIONAL government. What is happening is that the Western Cape Government is being effective in testing and reporting along with being vocal about the Government’s (read ANC) failure to manage the Lockdown and economy.

It follows then that the NATIONAL organisations (like the SAPS and SANDF etc.) will be ‘prejudiced against what is seen as a White Monopoly Capital movement against the government. And, those that are hurt or disturbed by the maltreatment and highlighting of that treatment of our poor are now mobilising to ‘balance the scales’.

If ever we needed strong, empathetic leadership to unite our country it is now.

Passionate about Port Elizabeth and definitely NOT packing for Perth. Alan's ethos is epitomised in the words of Nelson Mandela; "I have fought against white domination and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the idea of a democratic and free society. If need be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die." See more articles by Alan.
