Uncontained excitement filled the atmosphere on Wednesday, 1 March, as Varsity College Port Elizabeth hosted a CANSA Shavathon to help make a difference. Staff and students came out in numbers to raise awareness and support this event raising R1000 for CANSA.

The CANSA Shavathon is a joint initiative between two of Varsity College’s student committees – VC Cares (Varsity College’s student volunteer body) and the Student Liaison Body (SLB). Says Jaci Howell Student Relations Manager Varsity College Port Elizabeth: “We are all in this together – which is why, during March, awareness is being created on not only the importance of adopting a healthy lifestyle, but also to bring hope and encouragement to those who are battling CANCER. We also wanted to show our support for our fellow students and friends who have lost loved ones to cancer”.

“The CANSA Shavathon we hosted was loads of fun and a good day to raise awareness for all fighters, warriors and those affected by Cancer” says 2nd year The IIE Bachelor of Education in Foundation Phase Teaching student, Chelsea Harty. While, Chairperson of the Student Liaison Body, Josh Kilgour (3rd year The IIE Bachelor of Commerce) shared: “The energy and team work between VC Cares and the SLB was awesome and made for a successful Shavathon – the turnout was great and the afternoon certainly filled with tons of fun and laughter all around”.
