Water Disruptions Continue in Nelson Mandela Bay

6 February 2020 By Alan Straton

Nelson Mandela Bay continues to experience water shortages in a number of areas across the Metro. This is due to a drastic drop to 29% of the average level of our supply dams.

Due to a continued increase in consumption and the ongoing drought in the Metro and Eastern Cape, one of our main supply dams (Impofu Dam) has reached a critically low level, making it impossible to extract water from it. This scenario has resulted in water deficits in our distribution system. The current average Metro consumption is approximately 300 megalitres per day, as compared to the system input of about 270 ML. The resultant deficit of 30 megalitres has caused the depletion of the capacity of most of our reservoirs and is causing intermittent or no supply to most of the areas in the Metro.

The following areas are affected:

  • Walmer Heights
  • Walmer
  • Charlo
  • Newton Park
  • Cotswold
  • Fairview area
  • North End
  • Sydenham
  • Gelvandale
  • Algoa Park
  • New Brighton
  • Mill Park
  • Parts of Zwide

To assist the residents of the affected areas, water tankers are being deployed as follows:

  • Greenacres Hospital – Parking lot
  • Dischem – 2nd Avenue
  • Builders Warehouse – Walmer Heights
  • Fairview area
  • Cotswold – Mooregrove Primary School

Other water tankers are positioned in other areas with water disruption challenges:

  • Tambo Village
  • KwaNobuhle Area 11
  • Mahashe – Joe Slovo
  • Kingston – Joe Slovo

The Municipality urgently appeals to all residents to use water extremely sparingly and to adhere to the following measures:

  • Water usage must be restricted to a maximum of 50 litres per person per day.
  • Bricks or filled coldrink bottles must be placed in the cistern of every toilet to reduce the flush volume.
  • Household toilets must be flushed with non-municipal water (e.g. grey/used, rain or borehole water).
  • Water-efficient showerheads only must be used in showers.

For information about the water tankers, please call the NMBM Service Delivery Call Centre at 0800205050
