3. NEWS FROM THE DA

DA AND INDEPENDENT GROWTH ACCELARATE ANC’S SLIDE IN NELSON MANDELA BAY METRO

These two wards are very interesting barometers for the forthcoming local government elections in 2016, where the DA has publicly stated that it intends wining this strategic metro municipality.

Uitenhage has been rocked by a number of violent service delivery protests over the past few years. The impact of these protests and the outcomes of yesterday’s by-elections are an ominous portent of things to come for the ANC in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro.

The DA has grown steadily in Ward 46, which incorporates a large chunk of KwaNobuhle. In the 2011 local government elections the DA got 22.43% of the vote, in the May 2014 national/provincial elections 23.21%, and in the November 2014 by-election 28%.

This indicates that the governing ANC cannot arrest the slide in support that brought them below 50% in the national/provincial election. This despite the frantic campaigning of senior ANC figures such as the deputy president, Cyril Ramaphosa, no less.

The result in Ward 42, where an independent candidate beat the ANC, is an unmistakable sign that the party (ANC) is not bigger than the people. This result highlights the vulnerability of the ANC and this even without the contestation of the “new kid on the ANC’s block”, the EFF.

The low voter turnout in both wards (Ward 42, 46.5% and Ward 46, 35.36%) show that the ANC can no longer turn out their supporters at will.

The face of local government is set to change forever due to the woeful performance of the ANC in this sphere of government for so long. The ANC’s tolerance of chaotic and corrupt governance in the Metro under self-serving and/or inept leadership has finally come home to haunt them.

This result will surely be reverberating in the ears of the ANC national spokesperson, Zizi Kodwa, and the ANC provincial secretary, Oscar Mabuyane, who both pronounced an emphatic ANC-victory.

This result shows that the ANC will not govern until “Christ returns”, rather that democracy and the wishes of the people is here to stay in a constitutionally democratic South Africa.

DA NELSON MANDELA BAY CAUCUS REJECTS UNDEMOCRATIC BEHAVIOUR OF COUNCIL SPEAKER

The Democratic Alliance NMB caucus walked out of council in protest earlier today, following a spectacular failure on the part of the Speaker, Cllr Maria Hermans, to administer council Rules of Order in an impartial manner.

The blatant ANC bias on display in a dismal performance reminiscent of recent similar behaviour towards opposition parties in parliament,  can only be described as vintage Baleka Mbete.

The Speaker not only failed to apply the rules of order as legislatively required to do but failed to do so whilst allowing an ANC member to eviscerate the character and integrity of one of our councillors in their absence.

The Democratic Alliance has noted with deep concern the significant increase in such instances of poor judgement and the lack of impartial application of council rules of order by the Speaker.

Until recently, the speaker has always enjoyed the confidence and support of the DA caucus. Sadly a watershed moment has been reached where we feel that we have no alternative but to to consider bring a motion to council calling for a vote of no confidence in the Speaker.

In addition, the DA have requested the audio tapes of the meeting to assess the viability of bringing defamation charges against the ANC member who raised scurrilous and disgraceful allegations against one of our members in their absence.

It would of course be easy to view this incident in isolation but it is quite clear that this is the beginning of a bitter battle of attrition that will be waged with increasing intensity in the run-up to the 2016 local government elections.

The ANC have realised now that after their dismal showing in the May 2014 general elections, where their support slipped to just under 49% of the vote for the first time.

It is clear that the gloves are off and that the ANC will increasingly adopt any strategy in a desperate attempt to cling to power in the face of a growing opposition.

We accept this challenge willingly. We will not be deterred by such undemocratic behaviour, which serves to strengthen our resolve in bringing better services, jobs and economic growth to a city that has been systematically run into the ground in recent history.

The people of this metro deserve better, a DA run metro will be a better place to live.

I also want to thank the residents who give feedback when their complaints/queries have indeed been settled so that I can close my files. The Metro does not always inform my office when a problem has been rectified.

To all my residents of Ward 9, may this Christmas and the present year end on a cheerful note and make way for a fresh and bright New Year.
