1. ILLEGAL DUMPING
I have been informed that a number of black bags and garden refuse has been dumped in the Baakens Valley and around some open areas in the Ward.
Please note that this is creating a fire hazard and making it impossible for the Metro to cut a fire break were necessary.
I hereby kindly request you to please report any illegal dumping to our office’s or the numbers provided.

Please take note that it is an offence to place refuse in the street prior to the day of collection – broken glass causes injuries (please wrap it).

- Fernglen – Thursdays
- Sunridge – Thursdays
- Framesby – Thursdays
- Framesby North – Fridays
- Westering – Fridays

3. PLEA TO ANIMAL OWNERS
We have recently received complaints from a very concerned resident with respect to their animals being attacked by “free running dogs”
The latest incident was in Glenelg Road, Fernglen when a white and black cat was the victim of a vicious attack by what would appear to be a large dog. The cat was left for dead and was found lying on the neighbours verge at 07:30 a.m and rushed to the vet who confirmed that it was a dog attach and not hit by a car as originally thought.
We urge you to please take care and ensure your animals especially dogs are keep in your yard or on a leash when you take them for a walk.
We need to avoid these unnecessary incidents.

6. NEWS FROM THE DA
DA OPPOSES ALGOA BAY FISH FARMS
The Democratic Alliance (DA) is strongly opposed to the proposed site of the Algoa Bay Fish Farm project, taking into account the uncommunicated nature of the project as well as the potential financial impact.
Following the recent meeting to engage the public on the contentious issue of the Algoa Bay Fish Farm, it has become clear that the process to date has not included sufficient public participation at any level.
The metro faces potential tourism Rand losses of around R13 billion, but the main role players, viz Tourism and Business, were kept in the dark and were uninformed as to the nature of the project.
The DA’s position is that the fragile metro economy cannot afford the potential loss of tourism, nor can it be subjected to a hugely intrusive development on our beachfront which has the potential to severely damage the ecology of Algoa Bay.
We are supportive of the idea of aquaculture within the metro and have indicated that we would support such an initiative at a more appropriate site. The Ngqura CDC would be an ideal site and has already identified a suitable area within the development zone for such activities. There are also immediate benefits for this site in that land based aquaculture is not only proven to be more cost effective, it also creates more jobs.
The long term effects on the metro’s economy have not been quantified sufficiently, and currently the negative impact would seem to outweigh any positives regarding the future of the proposed fish farm.
The entire process of public participation must be redone to afford all affected and interested parties the opportunity to participate. The DA insists that the proposed fish farm project be open to scrutiny, and that the metro and residents be fully involved in all aspects.
The DA have already engaged with the relevant National as well as Local Government Departments, and will ensure that Business, Tourism and the public will be involved in the process.
DA POWER TO THE PEOPLE CAMPAIGN (ESKOM)
Eskom Executive must pay back R 63m in Bonuses.
Since load-shedding began in 2008, Eskom’s top brass has received a staggering R63 million in performance bonuses. In 2012 and 2013 alone, these bonuses amounted to R31 million.
Bonuses for doing what exactly?
These bonuses are in addition to their massive salary packages (Eskom’s top 3 executives earned R24.4 million last year).
The Eskom monopoly has dumped South Africa in a crisis through incompetence and mismanagement. Their “performance bonuses” are an insult to every South African.
Every cent of these bonuses must be returned, and all future bonuses must be placed on hold until we emerge from this crisis.
WHAT WE MUST DO
If the DA were in Government, we would immediately:
- Declare a National Crisis – Acknowledge that loadshedding is indicative of a national energy crisis.
- Open the grid – Allow independent power producers to contribute to the national grid.
- Recoup ESKOM bonuses – Recover taxpayers’ money paid in bonuses and freeze future bonus payments.
- Give tax breaks on generators – Negotiate with National Treasury to make the purchase of generators tax deductible.
- Prioritise Medupi & Kusile – Adopt a “World Cup” approach to prevent further delays at the power stations.
ESKOM CRISIS: BY THE NUMBERS
- R300bn – Estimated cost of loadshedding economy since 2008
- R633 000 – Average annual salary 46 000 employees
- R22.8m – Salary & bonuses of former CEO Brian Dames in 2013.
- R275 000 – Cost of installing a back generator for President Zuma at Nkandla.
- 0 – Number of statements by President the energy crisis.
- 5 – Number of years that Medupi power stations are behind schedule.
- R176.6bn – Estimated budget overrun & Kusile. (Initial combined budget: current estimate: R326.4bn).
Please support the aforementioned Campaign.
