KRAGGA KAMMA TRANSFER SITE UPDATE
We received the following feedback from the Metro re the Kragga Kamma Transfer Site:
“…As discussed, the developments at Kragga Kamma will probably begin towards the end of the year. The consultant will be providing us with a programme of action for all steps to be taken, once I get it I will forward it to you…”
“…consultants have been appointed and are looking at alternative construction methods…”
I will keep you up to date with any further feedback I receive.
STREET LIGHTS ISSUES:
We received a number of complaints w.r.t. the quality of the energy saver bulbs used to replace the current street lights and have reported it to the Metro. According to feedback received, they are currently
“…busy with negotiations with the supplier to supply a better quality lamp…”
Kindly take note that all replacements taking place at present are already done with a better quality lamp. Also take note that due to staff shortages the turn around time for fixing faulty street lights is very slow. Please send your reference numbers, etc. to us and we can follow it up for you together with the list we have in the office.
Thanks to those residents who report faulty streetlights to my office.
Some issues from the Metro which I would like to bring under your attention:
BOOK DONATIONS FOR LOCAL LIBRARIES & SCHOOLS
Please donate a new book for distribution to our libraries and schools, to celebrate National Book Week 2012, which is being hosted in our Metro this year.
Donation collection boxes are placed in all municipal libraries, at the St George’s Park offices of the Economic Development & Recreation Services Directorate, and on the seventh floor, Lillian Diedericks Building, Govan Mbeki Avenue.
HERITAGE MONTH CELEBRATIONS
The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality encourages the people of the city to love, respect and celebrate the heritage sites. These sites tell the story of different periods in the development of the Metro.
The Heritage Sites Awareness program starts on 11 September 2012 and ends on 24 September 2012. The targeted stakeholders are the pupils and the residents who live in communities close to the heritage sites.
STREET CHILDREN:
Kindly take note of the following information on a flyer which was distributed throughout the Metro during the month:
A CRY FOR HELP…
ARE STREET CHILDREN A PROBLEM, NUISANCE, EYESORE, PEST, LITTLE CRIMINALS OR FORGOTTEN WINGLESS ANGELS?
STREET CHILDREN CAN BE SEEN AT:
STREET CORNERS, TRAFFIC LIGHTS, BUSINESS PREMISES, STREETS, SHOPPING MALLS, PARKING AREAS, SPORTS MEETINGS AND RESIDENTS.THEY ARE SUBJECTED TO VERBAL ABUSE AND SCOLDING BY IRRITATED DRIVERS, SHOPPERS AND RESIDENTS.
AS SOME OF US DON’T WANT TO SEE ANY SUFFERING, WE SUPPORT STREET CHILDREN BY GIVING THEM MONEY OR FOOD.
YOU ARE ENCOURIAGING STREET CHILDREN TO STAY ON THE STREET.
HELP US TO HELP THEM!
SEVERAL SAFE HAVENS ARE AVAILABLE IN THE METRO WHEREBY STREET CHILDREN COULD BE SHELTERED AND RECEIVE PROPER CARE AND EDUCATION.
FIVE CHILDREN THAT WERE TAKEN OFF THE STREET ARE CURRENTLY EXCELLING AT SCHOOL AND THEY ARE PREPARED TO CHANGE THEIR LIVES FOR THE BETTER.

SEWERAGE SPILLS IN THE BAAKENS RIVER:
Feedback we received from the Metro w.r.t. the foul smell in the Baakens Valley close to the Mashee Gholf Course:
“…Our contractors had worked on the pumpstation located near to the Baakens Valley yesterday, therefore had to shut the main line. This matter however has been resolved…”
‘CHRISTMAS BOXES’ DEMANDED BY METRO STAFF:
Residents in other wards have been plagued by cleaning staff recently who have used the following methods to elicit “Christmas boxes”.
They produce a list on a clipboard, tell residents they are “in arrears” and want money for last year.
If residents object and tell them they have donated last year, the refuse workers tell them that those collectors were “skabengas” and should not have been given money as they were not genuine workers and that “arrears” must now be paid to the “genuine” collectors.
This has led to several ugly confrontations and scenarios where the workers collect only one bag and leave the rest. We received feedback from Environmental Services of the Metro that they have distributed a letter to all employees stating that:
“… under no circumstances can they demand Christmas gifts they are paid good salary more than even professional people. Please the residents must take registration numbers and a fleet number of a truck so that we can investigate the matter…”
ALLEGED ATTACK ON FERNGLEN RESIDENT:
At the beginning of August 2012 one of our Fernglen residents was allegedly attacked by a municipal refuse collector outside his house.
I have sent questions through to the Metro and have been informed that certain recommendations have been made and the incident is being investigated at present by Labour Relations. As soon as I receive any further feedback, I will convey same.
BAY WEST DEVELOPMENT – Site open to the public:
We received the following information from Cllr Margaret de Andrade (Ward Councillor for Ward 39 and Chairperson: Bay West City Environment Monitoring Committee) w.r.t. a legal notice for the Bay West Development which was published in the Herald of September 5, 2012.
“…This will also be published in a free newspaper in this week!
“In accordance to ROD number ECm1/387/N/08-167 section 4.1.23 states that the site is open to the public for the purposes of collecting any remaining plant specimens for the private collectors for a period of 1 month”.
Any persons who wishes to collect plant specimens from the site must adhere to section 5.1.20 of the ROD, which states that “those species protected in terms of the Cape Nature and Environmental ordinance require the necessary permits to be collected from DEDEA as well as these species protected under the National Forest Act requires the relevant permits to be obtained from the Department Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries”.
All interested persons with the applicable permits can meet at the site entrance for the duration of the month period starting 5 September 2012 between 08:00 and 15:00 at the end of Walker Drive, Sherwood, to be inducted before being allowed on site.
