Ward 9 News – October 2012

6 October 2012 By Ward 9

To see how hard working Ward Councillors go about their jobs, see Ward 9 councillor, Heinrich Muller’s newsletter below. Scroll down to see the contact Details for Ward 9.

DASO LANDSLIDE ELECTORAL VICTORY AT NMMU

We received the following statement from Mr Athol Trollip, DA Leader Eastern Cape:

“The youth make up a disproportionate percentage of society in SA and they are clearly concerned and anxious about their futures especially as the number of unemployed and unemployable graduates and matriculants grows.

This election result is an important and timeous “injection” in our fledgling democracy that is more and more being threatened by the arrogant hegemony of the ruling party and its affiliates.

The DA is confident that based on this result that it will continue to make significant inroads into the ANC’s majority across the province as it has done in the NMMU SRC election and in the last local government election in the Nelson Mandela Metro.
The DA won the election for the first time in September 2011, with a very narrow majority of 200 votes.

A year after good student governance and the fulfillment of a realistic and coherent electoral manifesto the DASO went into yesterday’s election quietly confident that they would be given a renewed mandate to govern the NMMU SRC.
They won 16 of the 21 seats on the SRC,  additionally, DASO has won all four Site Representative Portfolio’s, all Faculty Council Seats and 7 out of 8 Oppidani Council Seats.

What is of grave concern however is the undemocratic and thuggish behaviour of SASCO aligned students, who when they came to learn of their imminent crushing defeat, resorted to switching off the electricity, invading a voting station and stealing a Ballot box (which had fortunately already been counted). This behaviour is an ominous portent of things to come in future elections where the ANC will come under more and more pressure as shown by the DA’s by election results yesterday.

DASO like the DA is more and more being embraced by voters as a competent and realistic alternative to SASCO and the ANC.”

KRAGGA KAMMA TRANSFER SITE UPDATE

I am receiving numerous queries w.r.t. the status of the Kragga Kamma transfer site. I have not received any further feedback as to that they will start towards the end of the year.

Please refrain from dumping refuse bags outside the gates of the closed transfer site. The site will also not be opened in the interim due to the unsafe conditions at the skips.

NEWS FROM THE METRO:

Some issues from the Metro which I would like to bring under your attention:

ELECTRICITY USAGE

We received the following information w.r.t. prepaid electricity usage:

How is the purchase of electricity calculated?
The purchase of electricity is calculated each month. At the beginning of a new month the process starts from zero again.
Block 1: 0 – 350 kWh will be charged at R1.0409 (VAT included) per kWh.
Block 2: 351 – 600 kWh will be charged at R1.2426 (VAT included) per kWh.
Block 3: 600 kWh and up will be charged at R1.4706 (VAT included) per kWh

Will I save money if I bulk buy in a month?
Purchase only what you need per month as the tariff / charge is calculated on your monthly usage / purchase. On the first day of the month you start at the tarrif as indicated in block 1 (page 1). Purchase enough to last the month to ensure that you don’t end up paying a higher tariff (for example Block 3) for the month. Should you require to purchase close to the end of the month, purchase only enough for the remaining period of the month.

What can I do to reduce my monthly usage?
Ensure your geyser is operational only when needed and set thermostat to 60°C.
Use energy saving bulbs only, where down lighters are required, use LED down lighters only.
Limit the lights used at night to illuminate your property.
Switch off all appliances, including your computer when not in use.
If you have a swimming pool, reduce the on-cycle time, consult your pool specialist for advice.
Consider solar power where possible.
Consider switching to gas appliances such as a gas stove, heater, etc.

As you can see, the more you use in a month, the more you pay in that month.
