Ward 9 News for June 2012

4 July 2012 By Ward 9

To see how hard working Ward Councillors go about their jobs, see Ward 9 councillor, Heinrich Muller’s newsletter below. Scroll down to see the contact Details for Ward 9.

Kragga Kamma Tip Site

Please take note that the Metro intends closing the Kragga Kamma tip site from the middle of July 2012.

They are currently cleaning the tip site and the notice boards have already been put up outside the gate.

We have received the following information from the Metro w.r.t. the aforesaid:

“…Notices to this effect will be displayed at the site entrance with effect from 21 June 2012. Such notices will further indicate the location of the nearest alternate sites (5th Avenue Walmer, Hunters Retreat, Algoa Park) and that the fine for illegal dumping of waste is up to R2 000.

Similar notices will be published in the local media, Municipal Offices, Municipal web page and in the Municipal accounts rendered to the adjacent suburbs of the site.

2 Peace Officers will be placed at the site for at least one (1) month after temporary closure to deter illegal dumping. (This period will be reviewed as and when required.)

The installation of CCTV cameras will be investigated to further assist with policing incidents of illegal dumping…”

I want to urge the public to please be patient and give their support by abiding to the rules and regulations. Further information will be forwarded as soon as possible.

News From the Metro

Some issues from the Metro which I would like to bring under your attention:

Budget

The budget was approved at our last council meeting. Please take note that the Democratic Alliance DID NOT vote in favour of the budget, but was outnumbered by the majority. Kindly take note that the following have been increased by 13 %:

  1. Refuse general increase
  2. Sanitation general increase
  3. Water Consumption (tariffs & charges) increase

Particulars of the increased charges are available for inspection and enquiries can be made during normal office hours (08:00 – 12:45 and 14:00 – 16:00) at:

  • Room 1108, eleventh floor, Lillian Diedericks Building (formerly Brister House), Govan Mbeki Avenue, Port Elizabeth
  • Broadway Building, 2 Chase Street, Uitenhage
  • Municipal Buildings, 1 Voortrekker Street, Despatch

Applications for exemptions and/or rebates must be made on the prescribed form obtainable from the Council’s website: www.nelsonmandelabay.gov.za and the various municipal Customer Care Centres and must be returned to these offices or P O Box 834, Port Elizabeth preferably by not later than 31 JULY 2012. Full details of the conditions pertaining to the rebates and exemptions are contained in the Council’s Rates Policy, which is available for inspection at the aforementioned Centres or may be viewed on the Council’s website: www.nelsonmandelabay.gov.za

Written representations in respect of the above should be lodged with the Acting Municipal Manager, P O Box 116, Port Elizabeth, 6000 to reach him not later than TUESDAY, 17 JULY 2012…”

We are challenging kids to read 15 books in 6 weeks! Can you do it?

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipal Libraries issue a challenge to all library users between the ages of three and fifteen (3 – 15). We ask young readers to read at least eight (8) books in just six weeks.  Those who manage to read 8 books will be eligible to attend a celebratory party at the library in August 2012.

Friends and family of these avid readers will be able to follow their progress by viewing the “brag” boards in each participating library. Readers will receive a gold star for every book read or for a book which is read to them, after they have told the librarian enough about to book to show they have indeed read it. The reading challenge starts on 17 June and ends on 27 July 2012. Contact Person: Mr. Nkosi Sikhosana (Children’s Librarian, Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, Economic Development & Recreational Services Directorate, Tel: 041 506 1379, Fax: 041 506 1390, Email: nsikhosana@mandelametro.gov.za).

SASSA

For those who missed my previous newsflash: after receiving numerous queries from residents with regards to the re-registration for old age grants, I received the following notification from SASSA:

“SASSA has changed the decision to re-register (new SASSA cards) for all beneficiaries receiving their grants in banks (ACB) from June 2012. Beneficiaries are now requested to re-register from JANUARY 2013.

DO NOT WORRY, YOUR GRANT WILL NOT BE AFFECTED.”

Traffic Control

We received the following feedback from the Traffic Department:

“…Speed law enforcement was conducted along Bougainville Drive, Westering

On 17 April 2012 between 06:30 – 08:30, a total of two hundred (200) vehicles were measured, the highest speed recorded was 79 km/h and one (1) prosecuted for exceeding the speed in a 60 km/h zone.

On 15 May 2012 between 15:10 – 17:10, a total of thirty five (35) vehicles were measured, the highest speed recorded was 78 km/h and five (5) prosecuted for exceeding the speed in a 60 km/h zone.

We measured the speed of two hundred and thirty five (235) vehicles, six (6) prosecuted, the highest speed recorded was 79 km/h and the offence rate was 2.5%.

The area will be monitored as and when manpower permits

Fathers Day

On Sunday, 17 June 2012, we celebrated Fathers’ Day and hoped that all fathers enjoyed their day. The DA Ward 9 Branch Committee handed out a thank you say card and a sweet at old age homes and schools in our Ward. I would like the thank those who showed their appreciation for this small gesture from our side to help put a smile on your day.

Job Creation Strategy

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality appointed SRVT/AHS Joint Venture and Histoto Consulting to compile the Job Creation Strategy. This strategy sill be a method (tool) with which the Municipality can maximize the creation of job opportunities within its jurisdiction.

The consulting team is required to focus on four main areas over which the Municipality’s Infrastructure & Engineering Directorate has jurisdiction, namely: Roads, Stormwater-, Water & Sanitation Services.

If anyone is in need of any further information, please contact my office.
