Metro considering fishing ban

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality is currently considering banning fishing close to recreational beaches after it was discovered that chumming – the throwing of cut-up fish into the sea to attract sharks – was taking place close to surfing, paddling and swimming areas.

In a statement, the Municipality said its Beach Office had recommended a ban on angling from King’s Beach to Flat Rock and at other beaches, such as Bluewater Bay, St George’s Strand, Brighton Beach and Wells Estate, within 500 metres from lifeguard’s demarcated bathing areas. Other beaches such as Maitlands, Blue Horizon Bay and Van Staden’s River Mouth would also be included in the ban if it is imposed.

A public participation process will now be started to ensure that all stakeholders are consulted. We will keep you up to date as soon as we receive any further information.

Beach Front Dog Control Measures

Please be aware that dogs are only allowed on the beach (in the coastal zone) from the harbour wall to the King’s Beach slipway.

Between the slipway and pipe parking area, dogs are allowed at the back of beach on grassed areas only. Dogs are allowed again from the pipe parking area to Cape Receife. Dogs will also be allowed on the connecting sidewalks between King’s Beach and Hobie Beach.

Dogs will be allowed on all other beaches OUTSIDE of demarcated bathing areas.

Kindly take note that dogs are to be kept on a leash and owners must have means of disposing of faeces.

Please adhere to these measures as Council had promulgated the following fines:  Not removing faeces R1000.00, dog not on a leash R500.00 and walking a dog in a restricted area R500.00

Metro Water Safe for Human Consumption

We received the following information from the Metro:

“…a report submitted to the Infrastructure, Engineering and Electricity Committee states that as far as microbiological compliance is concerned the SANS 241 requirement is 97% compliance, while that of the Metro stands at 97.8%.

As far as chemical compliance is concerned, the report states that the SANS 241 requirement for possible health threats is 85% while the Metro records 99.2% compliance, the same as the national average. The report states that as a result no special interventions were required at this time…”

According to the abovementioned report, Nelson Mandela Bay water therefore remains safe for human consumption.

Start of the festive season 2011/12

Herewith an extraction from the speech of the Portfolio Chairperson for Sport, Recreation, Arts & Culture:

“…In terms of our disaster management plan, we will have three venue operation centres in Wells Estate, at the Beach Office in Humewood Beach and at Beachview where disaster, police and traffic officers will be deployed.  Our disaster management teams will also be present at all major events where there are large crowds anticipated.

Altogether, 55 Lifesavers will be deployed from Blue Horison Bay to St Georges Strand. Through our beach office, we will coordinate the aquatic emergency forum among the municipality, National Sea Rescue Institute, the Emergency Coastal Rescue Unit and the Voluntary Lifesaving Club to ensure safe bathing during the festive season.

TWENTY-FIVE Traffic Officers have been deployed to monitor by-law transgressions along the beachfront and key problem areas.  Our Traffic Services and the Police have held roadblocks at key areas throughout the city since October this year and this will be intensified during the festive season.
The success of all these initiatives will depend on the extent to which residents and visitors play their part. People must exercise extra caution particularly for their young ones. We look forward to a great Summer Season…”

Warning from SAPS re Framesby Footbridge

I have received information from SAPS that over the past couple of days, two children have been robbed on the footbridge between Framesby and Westering. Please be careful should you need to make use of this footbridge and DO report all cases to SAPS.

Ward 9 – DA Branch AGM

The annual meeting of the DA Branch (Ward 9) was held on 9 November 2011 and the following office bearers were elected:

  • Chairperson: Yolanda Leschinsky
  • Vice-chair: Andrew Wiseman
  • Secretary: Lynne Philips
  • Additional members: George Hitge, Julia & Gerhard Kühn, Charles Greeff, Jaco Jansen, Cheryl & Rainer Wüsthoff and Bernice Wright.

Congratulations to the new office bearers, good luck for the year ahead. I am looking forward to working with you.

Thank you to Cllr Bernice Wright, our outgoing chairperson for all her help and leadership during the past year.

James Kleynhans Swimming Pool, Westering

I have received confirmation from the Metro that the James Kleynhans Swimming Pool in Westering has been opened.

Theft of Motor Vehicles

SAPS are very concerned about the theft of motor vehicles and I want to emphasize their requests that residents adhere to the following:

  • Be vigilant when parking your vehicle at home, workplace or at shopping malls.
  • Ensure that your alarm of your vehicle is activated at all times.
  • If no alarm is installed, invest in a gear lock or steering wheel lock.

When parking and locking your vehicle:

  • Always use your remote and double check if the vehicle is indeed locked.
  • Criminals may use a remote to ‘jam’ the signal.

When staying in a flat or town house complex:

  • Ensure that the electric gates close fully behind you.
  • Check behind you before driving off to prevent unwanted persons entering.

To safeguard your vehicle, always park in a garage and/or behind locked gates!

Should you have any information re ‘chop shops’, please contact 0860010111 or your nearest police station.

Birthday Wishes

I would like to wish my assistant, Yolanda Leschinsky, a very happy birthday for the 30th November. God bless and may there be many more.
