PAINTING OF ROAD SIGNS / STREET NAME SIGNS

I have noticed and received complaints that a number of the street & road signs in Ward 9 have faded and need to be repainted. The municipality informed us that we should provide them with a list of faded road signs and street name signs.

I therefore urge you to identify road signs and/or street name signs which need repainting by contacting my office.

NEWS FROM THE METRO

Some issues from the Metro which I would like to bring under your attention:

Splash Festival

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality invites you to the annual Splash Festival at Hobie Beach from 6 to 9 April 2012.

“…The Splash Festival is one of the flagship events the city hosts and promises to be four days of fun for the whole family. The music genres ranges from gospel music, kwaito and soul music and feature artists like the well known Zonke, who hails from Port Elizabeth. Loads of entertainment is on offer for the kids and a variety of sports for sport lovers…” Possible problems to be experienced at the Metro’s refuse sites

We received the following e-mail from the Metro w.r.t. the refuse sites in the Metro:

“…Bid Evaluation Committee dated 24/2/12 resolved that certain tenders in all Directorates will have to be re-advertised and proceed again through the bid committees for award. This decision would, amongst other, affect current existing contracts as follows:-

  1. CE 68/1 Supply and Delivery of 30 m3 Open Roll-on Bulk Containers
  2. CE 68/2 Hire of Refuse Bulk Containers and Services
  3. CE 68/8 Repairs to Roll-on Containers

An item was immediately drafted to extend these current essential waste services contracts to allow for the finalization of the Bid process of new tenders. The item was submitted to the Bid Evaluation Committee on 23/3/12.

The item will now proceed to the next Bid Adjudication Committee sitting on 12/4/12 and then onto the Municipal Manager for a resolution.

PLEASE TAKE NOTE OF THE FOLLOWING: Negative consequences are expected for a duration of approximately two weeks, as the Municipal Manager’s resolution is not expected before 12/4/12 and the expiry date of these essential waste services contracts are 1/4/12. It is anticipated that five (5) Transfer Stations in Summerstrand, Kabega, Framesby, Walmer and Hunters Retreat servicing approximately fifteen thousand households will be closed and the removal of waste from all sixty-nine (69) drop-off centers and temporary skip sites will be severely affected…”

China FAW executives in Nelson Mandela Bay to sign historic agreement

The Coega Development Cooperation (CDC) and the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality hosted a Gala Dinner on Monday to welcome China FAW Group Corporation Executives to Nelson Mandela Bay. FAW top brass are in Nelson Mandela Bay to preside over the signing of a cooperative business agreement that will see FAW invest in a new assembly plant at the Coega Industrial Development Zone.

The investment, totalling R677-million, will see FAW start with the assembly of 5,000 medium to heavy commercial vehicles and 30,000 passenger and light commercial vehicles in subsequent phases.

Delivering his welcome address at the Gala event, the Executive Mayor, Councillor  Zanoxolo Wayile expressed his excitement at the massive boost the investment will have on the economy of Nelson Mandela Bay and committed the city to working closely with FAW and the CDC to guarantee the success of the venture. “The partnership between FAW and Nelson Mandela Bay should be used as a catalyst to attract more investment to the region. This cooperation naturally reinforces our relationship and provides an impetus to the way in which China and South Africa address the social and economic inequalities and disparities that confront both our great countries”, remarked Mayor Wayile.

In his reply, the Chairman of FAW Group Corporation, Mr Jin Yi,  said his company was committed to growing the economy of the region. “Our desire is to contribute positively to the economic development of Nelson Mandela Bay, the Province of the Eastern Cape and South Africa as whole. Through this investment we hope to contribute to South Africa’s project of growing the economy and providing much needed work opportunities”, concluded Chairman Yi…”
