Walmer residents in close call with robbers

27 February 2012 By Port Elizabethan

Walmer residents have been cautioned to be aware of their surroundings while out shopping after an elderly couple were the victims of three robbers armed with a knife on Saturday morning, 25 February 2012 in the area’s shopping precinct.

The presence of an armed response company did not deter the threesome with two suspects attempting to distract ADT Officer Garth Hammond while the third grabbed the victim’s handbag and tried to make his escape.

Aware of the thieves’ plans, Hammond counter-acted and apprehended him a block away from the incident scene. Hammond retrieved and returned the handbag to the victim and handed the suspect over to the Walmer Police for arrest.

Nearby shop manager of Wagtails, Deidre Terblanche said, “We are extremely grateful for the quick response and the professional, cool manner in which the Officer Hammond handled this situation.”

“The area is increasingly becoming a haunt for opportunistic criminals and we have been in negotiations with the Walmer Neighbourhood Watch to commit our support and resources to help combat the current spike of crime in the area,” says Mike Byers, Managing Director for ADT Security in the Eastern Cape.

He concluded that ADT security was working proactively with SAPS to help safeguard residents and shoppers in the area, specifically in Albert and Union Roads which was high on the priority list.”
