van de Ryst Goes Down to Peter

27 December 2010 By Zports

www.MyPE.co.za: Top Eastern Province triathlete Ryan Peter upset pre-race favourite Corney van der Ryst to claim line honours in a very closely fought 3rd and final round of the EPTA Triathlon Summer Series held at Port St Francis on Sunday 26th December. Peter proved too strong over the final 5km run leg to finish in 1hr 2min 24 seconds just over 30 seconds ahead of early race leader van der Ryst with Brendan Lowen in 3rd place some 45 seconds further back.

Ryan Peter“I had a fantastic race on a course which was better suited to me, especially the run leg which was a lot tougher than that of rounds 1 and 2.” said Ryan Peter, “Jack (de Kort) and Corney set a blistering pace for the swim and cycle legs, but I had a solid bike leg heading into the run leg in 6th place and managed to take the lead with about 1km to go.”

Liza Bright rounded off an unbeaten Series with her 3rd win in the ladies race in a time of 1hr 11min 37sec with Mariette Hattingh in 2nd place and Esthea de Villiers in 3rd. Bright raced hard to finish in 12th position overall in a well supported race which featured over 100 individuals and some 50 teams and was held in ideal racing conditions.

Van de Ryst’s two wins and a second place secured him the overall Series honours with Peter (3rd, 2nd, 1st) placing 2nd overall and Jack de Kort 3rd (2nd, 3rd, 4th) whilst Lisa Bright with 3 wins was a clear winner of the overall ladies title with Esthea de Villiers pulling into 2nd place after her strong finish in round 3 and Emma Brewster claiming 3rd place despite not racing in round 3.

“Participants can expect some exciting inclusions to the Summer Series for 2011 and 2012 as we strive to make this the greatest short course triathlon event in the country, ” said Series organiser Mike Zoetmulder of Zports.
