Unemployed suffer due to failures at Department of Labour office in East London

20 April 2023 By Alan Straton

Dear Editor

Unemployed residents of the Buffalo City Municipality are suffering due to the Department of Labour’s inability to timeously process their much-needed Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) payments.

On Tuesday, 18 April 2023, I conducted an oversight inspection at the Department of Labour office in East London and was shocked to find that some people have been queuing for more than five days without any assistance.

The inability of the department to do its job is making the poor even poorer as people have to borrow money to travel to East London, just to be turned away, or be given a different day to return.

We were also met by frustrated department officials who informed us that the information and communications technology (ICT) system is regularly offline and that this, coupled with loadshedding, is making it impossible for them to perform their duties effectively.

They also have limited tools of trade available and are experiencing a debilitating shortage of laptops. Only about 20 people are being assisted daily.

I have raised this issue with the DA Shadow Minister for Employment and Labour, Dr Michael Cardo MP, and requested his intervention to assist the unemployed residents of Buffalo City by taking the matter up in National Parliament.

The Eastern Cape has the highest unemployment rate in the country and the DA will not allow our people to suffer because the Department of Labour office is unable to assist individuals in accessing much-needed money to provide for themselves and their families.

The DA will not allow an uncaring ANC government to prey on the vulnerability of people.

Regards

Chantel King MP
