Today we focus on South Africa through a TED talk by Jacob Lief from the Ubuntu Fund. TED is a nonprofit devoted to spreading ideas, usually in the form of short, powerful talks (18 minutes or less). TED began in 1984 as a conference where Technology, Entertainment and Design converged, and today covers almost all topics – from science to business to global issues. Independently run TEDx events help share ideas in communities around the world.
Port Elizabeth’s local TEDx chapter is to be found here: www.TEDxPortElizabeth.org.za.
Jacob Lief is the Co-Founder and CEO of Ubuntu Education Fund, a non-profit organization that takes vulnerable children in the townships of Port Elizabeth, South Africa from cradle to career. Rather than expanding geographically, Ubuntu focus on the depth rather than breadth of their programs within a community of 400,000 people. In 2009, Jacob was an Aspen Institute Global Fellow and, in 2010, he was recognized by the World Economic Forum as a Young Global Leader. In 2012, he was asked to join the Clinton Global Initiative Advisory Committee. Jacob holds a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania.
