The latest news that the Currie Cup is to be contested by 6 teams from 2012 has resulted in a bit of confusion for the EP Kings’ supporters. All indications were that the EP Kings would perform in the Absa Currie Cup 1st division in 2011 with a goal of gaining ascendancy to the Absa Currie Cup Premier Division in 2012. “If you look at the results over the past year the Kings have been steadily improving and producing good results. This ended up with us (EP Kings) being crowned Absa Currie Cup 1st division champions in 2010 and also coming back home with the silverware from the recent IRB Nations’ Cup tournament staged in Bucharest earlier this month”, commented EPRU CEO, Anele Pamba.
He further added “the news of only 6 teams competing in next year’s Currie Cup does not sit well with many people, but all we can do from our side is to keep playing and producing positive results. Our aim, as it has always been, after losing in the second-leg of last year’s promotion-relegation play-off match against the Pumas, was to go one level further this year and to gain promotion to next season’s Absa Currie Cup Premier Division. We (EP Rugby) will not comment on the latest news found in various media publications about the new structure being put in place by SARU. If people wish to find out more about the changes then they need to contact SA Rugby and get the full details from their Communications Department”.
The CEO said that the EP Kings will continue focusing on the task at hand and urged supporters to continue coming out in numbers. “We are showing steady signs of improvement and we can ill-afford to have our planning derailed.”
The EP Kings kick off their Absa Currie Cup campaign with a friendly match against Free State Cheetahs on 8 July 2011 followed by their first competitive match of the Absa Currie Cup campaign on 15 July against SWD Eagles. Both matches will be played at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.
