Tourism: When is Enough Enough?

4 October 2024 By Alan Straton

The recent protest action by the One Voice group refers and I only have one question; “Are we not flogging a dead horse?”

Private Tourists come here and stay one night only as they are en route to somewhere else – Addo, Garden Route, Game Farms.

The only tourists that stay any length of time here are business, sport and cultural event tourists.

Over the last couple of decades our City has decimated most of our iconic tourist attractions. The Red Location Museum, Bayworld, our Southern Kings disappeared, the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium lost 7’s Rugby and then the all important Springbok Test, Manganese ridden beachfront, drinking on the beachfront, Donkin reserve is dangerous, historical buildings are owned by slumlords and not maintained, the Boardwalk is just another shopping center, adult nightlife is a joke, youth nightlife is scary, car guards are the new mafia, SAPS and Metro Police are MIA, ocean based tourism is frightening and subject to manganese ore dust, the ABYC Yacht Club eye candy has gone, no more week long sailing regattas, the list goes on.

Honestly, I have got to the point where I recommend that tourists do not visit – for me, that is HUGE.

Passionate about Port Elizabeth and definitely NOT packing for Perth. Alan's ethos is epitomised in the words of Nelson Mandela; "I have fought against white domination and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the idea of a democratic and free society. If need be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die." See more articles by Alan.
