The Algoa Bay Yacht club will be hosting the 60th 505 World Championships from 23 March to 3 April 2015. The 505 is a two man (person) one design dinghy that offers fast sailing and is one of the most active dinghy classes in the world with thousands of boats being actively sailed.
As part of the build up to the 505 World Championships the ABYC held a small practise regatta from 2 to 4 January 2015, where a select group of invited sailors got to taste the wind, weather and Port Elizabeth’s famous hospitality.
After the regatta, one of the sailors, Holger Jess, sent this letter to the 505 mailing list:
Dear All
We came back last week Tuesday from a great holiday in RSA and in my opinion RSA is the best country for a holiday and where you get the best value for money and we will go again next winter for sure.
I was sailing in Port Elizabeth with Tina Plattner and we had a good mix of conditions there and I have seen the location and club people told me what is planned and what will be where.
Club restaurant is very good, food in general is excellent and I gained some kilogram’s. The cool Windhoek or Castle beer in club bar is only 1,2€ or 1 GBP.
The Aussies with the high AUS$ and closed shipping for the Perth fleet should all go to the Worlds in RSA as it will be cheaper than racing a Nationals on the Australian East Coast.
Please support the RSA fleet and use the option for a great holiday and exciting sailing to make it a a big Worlds.
Unfortunately I had to cancel my still 50/50 option to go and crew for Wolfgang there as I am simply too busy with work and got further orders for new 505´s in and it is over 10 to do between now and Easter which includes 4 boats for the GBR fleet for supply in March and more for April and we also keep Jacob Bojsen-Moeller busy busy with orders. So I simply do not have the time to do the Worlds professional enough as wanted and put 2 full weeks in and instead will only use 5 days and do the Euro-Cup in FRA sailing with Meike in our new 915x.
All those going to RSA and do the PE Worlds will have great weather and racing and very warm water – the biggest danger is being sunburned as I got in the end there. City Lodge and Town Lodge are very good choices for accommodation – we stayed there now as well and it is close to ABYC.
Best regards and happy new Year to all
Holger
