Sitting on my porch last night (5 November) I could not help but notice that the only fireworks I could see were those in the suburbs of Kensington, Sydenham, Motherwell and the Northern Areas – the fact that I can only see those areas, the bay and a little bit of the beachfront may be the reason why, though.
In a recent Municipal press release, Kupido Baron stated; “…..residents are reminded of the dangers of fireworks and reminded not to discharge fireworks in residential areas at all.” Maybe you should come and have a braai and a dop at my place next Guy Fawkes, Kupido, and see just how many people do not take heed of your admonishments at all?
In earlier days, fireworks were freely available at your local store but now only seem to be available at the local grocer’s in Korsten.
What bewilders the hell out of me is that we are so vehemently against ‘colonial’ influences and yet we celebrate the uniquely colonial act of thwarting the blowing up of the Houses of Parliament in solidarity with our erstwhile colonial oppressors every year on 5 November.
Shame on you comrades? You need to immediately proceed to your nearest store and purchase a WWJS bangle – What Would Julius Say?
