Things could get interesting after the discard

23 March 2013 By Alan Straton

Three races were sailed on the second day of the 2013 Boardwalk Hobie 16 Nationals on Friday 22 March.

Only 3 points separate the top 2 Hobies of William and Lucinda Edwards (6) and Blain and Roxanne Dodds (9) – both from Plettenberg Bay. IN third and 4th place are Richard Ayres and Phillips McLaren (25) and trailing them by 2 points are Andrew and Angela Ward (27 points), who will be eager to discard a 15th in Race number 4 which could put them right up in the top three.

Friday’s sailing was once again a sausage which was sailed in 5 to 8 knot southerly breeze – once again making for great viewing along Hobie Beach with the top mark just off the Camel’s hump reef (between Bird Rock and Pollock Beach), the start off of Shark Rock Pier and the gate near Humewood beach.

Eager sailors tested the patience of Race Officer Doug Allison with two general recalls for the first race. Bringing out the big stick, Allison hoisted the black flag and the fleet behaved to get off a clean start. For most of the day, going inshore seemed to pay, escpecially after a shortened course which brought the top mark 0.3 nautical miles closer and slightly more inshore.

After 3 races and facing a late (after 4:00 pm) start for the 4th racing was called off until Saturday.

The top three:

  1. William and Lucinda Edwards
  2. Blaine and Roxanne Dodds
  3. Richard Ayres and Phillippa McLaren

Passionate about Port Elizabeth and definitely NOT packing for Perth. Alan's ethos is epitomised in the words of Nelson Mandela; "I have fought against white domination and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the idea of a democratic and free society. If need be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die." See more articles by Alan.
