The Sugar Evil – Do you experience Bliss Point?

3 February 2020 By Alan Straton

As a non animal product, no alcohol, no sugar human I do find it difficult to eat what other humans term ‘normal food’.

When explaining my lifestyle to people I jokingly add one more NO to my list – No Personality.

Anyway – my old comrade in arms on MyPE, Hilton Shorrock was Vegan. In those days (over 10 years ago) it was well nigh impossible to find suitable proteins and joy from commercially available food and, much to my horror I used to watch Hilton consume Sugar in various forms.

Hilton passed on to his higher purpose after a long bout with cancer.

Popular belief says that Sugar feeds Cancer and the substance is to be found everywhere in our food these days.

If you want to live healthier, lose weight and live longer then you have to cut Sugar out of your diet. Sugar is addictive and added to 80% or more of food. Sugar is as addictive as cocaine.

The daily recommended daily intake of sugar is 50g for women and 70g for men. But most people are consuming more than double this.

According to nutritionist and author Sarah Flower; ‘We are eating on average 30 to 40 teaspoons (120 to 160 grams) of the white stuff per day and it is having a dramatic effect on our bodies as well as our waistlines.”

Here is where you will find the substance that addicts and kills:

  • Fruit Juice – sugar overload
  • Carbonated Drinks – sugar overload
  • Low Fat Food – like Yoghurt
  • Pre-made Sauces
  • Tomato Sauce
  • Pre-made Spaghetti Sauce
  • Sports Drinks
  • Flavoured Milk
  • Granola
  • Flavoured Coffees
  • Iced Tea
  • Protein Bars
  • Vitamin Water
  • Pre-made Soup
  • Cereal Bars
  • Canned Fruit
  • Canned Baked Beans
  • Bottled Smoothies
  • Sweets
  • Ice Cream
  • Take away foods
  • Breakfast Cereal
  • Fortified wines, sherries, liqueurs and cider

Don’t think that you will dodge the bullet by drinking Diet Drinks – they are actually worse than regular and negatively affect your gut.

AND, remember, the key to losing weight and shaping your body is NOT through exercise only as 80-90% of your body shape is based on what you eat.

Also – most manufacturers hide the sugar content by reflecting it as ENERGY on the label – read and be informed.

Watch That Sugar Film to find out more.

That Sugar Film is a 2014 Australian documentary directed by and starring Damon Gameau. The film looks at hidden sugar in foods and the effect it can have on the human body.

The film follows Gameau’s experiment on himself, changing from his normal diet containing no refined sugar to a ‘health-conscious’ diet low in fat but high in sugar, equivalent to 160 grams (40 tsp) of sugar per day. As a result, Gameau gained weight, grew lethargic, and developed fatty liver disease. The sugar diet was selected such that his calorie intake was not increased from his normal diet.

Interviews with experts attribute this change to the high level of sugar he was ingesting, and in particular suggest that fructose may be the main culprit. It is suggested that artificial sweeteners may be no better.

The viewers are introduced to the “bliss point”, a term coined in the 1960s which applies here to the amount of sugar you can add to a food to make it optimally desirable. Adding more sugar beyond the “bliss point” leads to significant drop in desirability.

Following the experiment, he returned to his previous diet, and the ill effects were largely and quickly reversed.
