The Old Question of ‘Why Split the Vote?” Answered

23 October 2021 By Alan Straton

I was posed this conundrum on FB; “We need to avoid the rot of the ANC and prevent the dangerous EFF. My opinion is that the only way to do this is to vote for the one party big enough to keep them at bay.”

My answer:

  1. I hear you and must say that I DID feel exactly the same way.
  2. Obviously I do not fully agree with what you say and I base that on the following:
  3. The ANC will always be the party of ‘revolution’ that ‘saved the day’ but has become ‘corrupt and has strayed far from the path’ BUT supporters will continue to vote for them in the ‘hope that they will come right’.
  4. The DA (even if the entire party is devoid of white faces) has been tainted with the stench of apartheid.
  5. The EFF is frighteningly like the AWB.
  6. The ‘apartheid scare tactic’ of the DA placing the ‘swart gevaar’ of the ANC and EFF as a reason for the DA to be in the majority also does not sit easily with me.
  7. What the bigger parties are doing this LGE is to base their local campaigns on National Issues – the only guys basing their campaigns on LOCAL Issues are the independents and ‘smaller’ parties like AIM and THAT should be the main reason why you should support the ‘smaller parties’ as they have an inate understanding of the issues, will be nimble and focused on Nelson Mandela Bay and NOT beholden to any Provincial or National Agenda.

IF the DA gets the majority and the chance to Fix the Metro by the same token AIM or any of the other independents could do the same. Admittedly AIM is up against huge odds and at a scant one year old has issues of trust with voters dithering but genuinely concerned that they could be wrong in supporting such a movement.

What makes me convinced that I am on the right path is my determination and track record of service along with faith in all the like-mined persons that are also volunteering and standing up for residents across the Metro for no pay and just the joy of contributing.

An added bonus conviction of mine is the amount of tacit and overt support given to me by my fellow members of the 4th Estate – all jaded media hacks who have seen it all and when they read my AIMS and the AIM 10 Point plan all agree that what we propose is what our Metro needs to get out of this mess.

For far too long our Metro has been in a state of combat – we need to unite under one banner 0 that of the Metro – and move forward out of this mess. Putting THREE old foes together in a Coalition AGAIN will NOT solve our inertia.

Let’s start afresh and be a shining example of what Local Government should be!
