The Longhair and I get a Bye – See You at the Rugby

10 March 2011 By Alan Straton

The Mother in Law’s birthday is on 11 March. The EP Kings play the Pumas on 11 March. We like to tease the Mother in Law that her birthday falls within the ‘Ides of March’.

Although I am battling a bit with associating her with Julius Caesar and the actual Ides of March 4 days later on the 15th. Ja, ja, ja I know the wags will say that a comparison with Brutus is probably the better one. “I do not like the look of Brutus for he has a mean and hungry look” or the fact that he stabbed Caesar certainly does not apply to her either.

For a while now she has been stringing us along after finding out that the EP Kings play the Pumas on 11 March at the NMB Stadium by keeping us in suspense as to which day she will chose to celebrate this birthday – Friday or Saturday.

And, we received the royal decree today – Saturday 12 March is now the official birthday celebration extravaganza – prawns and other assorted crawling, swimming stuff will be cooked by yours truly, much wine will be quaffed, the old man will haul out various after dinner drinks and we will klap the lightie over the head as he drives us home full of good cheer.

Now, I just need to entice her to come to the match.

The Port Elizabeth Weather Guru is predicting 33% cloud cover, no rain and a 5 knots southerly wind for the game tomorrow. Kick off is at 7:00 pm.

The game promises to be a cracker as a few on and off the field scores need to be settled after last years promotion relegation game won by the Pumas. The EP Kings are not standing down from recent rumblings about the validity of their Pumas signings and have three ex Pumas players in the starting line up – Hannes Franklin (Vice Captain and Hooker), Ronnie Uys (Front Rank) and Jacques Coetzee (Flyhalf).

Good news for the Pumas and bad news for the EP kings is that big hitter Paul Perez’s injury will keep him of the field for a maximum of 9 months.

The other injured men in the EP camp likely to return in a couple of weeks are De Wet Barry, Jacques Potgieter, Wayne Stevens and Rory Duncan.

Puma insider, Hannes Franklin predicted a physical game noting that he will be playing more against “old team mates than old friends”.

The EP Kings Team to Play against the Pumas:

  1. Jaco Engels
  2. Hannes Franklin (Vice Captain)
  3. Ronnie Uys
  4. Barend Pieterse
  5. Ross Kennedy
  6. Devin Oosthuizen
  7. Mpho Mbiyozo
  8. Morne Hanekom
  9. Jacques Coetzee
  10. Jaco van Schalkwyk
  11. Marcello Sampson
  12. Mathew Tayler-Smith
  13. Siyanda Grey
  14. Norman Nelson
  15. Mzwandile Stick (Captain)
  16. Frank Herne
  17. Andre Schlechter
  18. Lungelo Payi
  19. Darron Nell
  20. Boela Abrahams

Passionate about Port Elizabeth and definitely NOT packing for Perth. Alan's ethos is epitomised in the words of Nelson Mandela; "I have fought against white domination and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the idea of a democratic and free society. If need be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die." See more articles by Alan.
