The Best and Worse Case Projections to Full Resumption of Power to Summerstrand, Walmer etc.

The mitigation measures put in place by the Municipality to restore power to the areas affected by the massive Power Outage when 4 Pylons transporting 132KV of electricity to Gqeberha fell over in high winds on Friday 23 August 2023 will see the following scenarios play out – all weather and snag dependent:

Power has been restored to the Dawid Stuurman Airport – vital in order to allow Gary to catch his connecting flight to China.

There are teams on the ground already and Eskom’s help has been roped in – they will deploy a team from the west to work towards a team from the Municipality in the east.

The pylons that fell over were not specifically part of another set that have been vandalised but part of the line that is to be replaced with monolithic pylons – some of which have already been installed.

The Kwaford transformer has been uplifted already and, barring any problems, will be in working order by the 27th of August.

This will give intermittent (load reduced) power to the affected area until such time as the new pylons and cable have been commissioned – the time frame on that is not so cast in stone and could take 3 months.

The Bottom Line:

  • Best case scenario for intermittent power: 27 August 2024
  • Worst Case scenario for intermittent power: 7 September 2024
  • Date on which all will be back to 100%: end November 2024.

The undertaking is a massive one and is not the only section of line identified as needing urgent maintenance. This line that failed on Friday was erected in 1978.
