That Old Number Three Again

4 March 2011 By Alan Straton

Fire Juggler

Everything happens in threes, but only if you are counting!

I had just finished putting up an article about Dan Platansky’s Summer Tour on MyPE yesterday, when Toni rang to tell me about tonights appearance by Brian Finch at Toni’s place this evening – I am Guilty of Recalling Finch and Henson.

And then (Dagless you can go away tasting a little bit of puke in your mouth now!) when the Longhair and our Apprentice were tossing around venue choices for supper the apprentice insisted on going to Toni’s or, Titshalakazi, as she is known to young Xhosa students the city over. I had the privilege of sitting in on one of Toni’s Xhosa classes for a bunch of Collegiate girls once and man did she make the language come alive for her rapt pupils and I.

Such a pity – we need more teachers like Toni.

And there it was – three contact points with Toni in one day and we were off for supper.

On arrival the STFU guys were setting up. STFU are Folk Club who play every Thursday night at Toni’s and are known as such for wanting people to ‘Shut The Farg Up’ when they are playing – ja, the jury is still out on that one. Listening to some old folk (as well as John, Alisdair and Channele playing folk renditions of some new stuff) did make me want to grow my hair, not wash it, tie dye a couple of T-Shirts, visit the Transkei and kick back with my Old Lady.

But, we were there for the food and the Apprentice Longhair’s former Xhosa teacher highly recommended the Curry Chicken Wrap to her, I settled for the Beef Pot and the Longhair plumped for Bobotie.

The damn Apprentice got the best dish in the house – plump chicken, great curry flavour and mounds of vegetables were barely restrained by the wrap which dominated the plate daring the meek of heart and hungry of stomach to eat it in one sitting. Suffice to say that the Apprentice was well and truly ‘suthile’ at the end and declared that she was not going to eat again for another two days.

I fear we have created a nearly 16 year old monster who was quite happy to sit and chat and listen to music whilst conveniently forgetting that it was a school night. Now she wants to attend Fire Klub this Saturday as well. Looks like it is time to get the old ball and chain out.

And, when the Longhair went to pay, we discovered that our meal was on the house, because; “your husband has done lots for me”. Looks like we will have to sneak in in disguise next time as we always feel embarrassed when such stuff happens.

Toni’s is highly recommended, even if you only go just for the Chicken Wraps.

I have cherished the idea of a democratic and free society. If need be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die." See more articles by Alan.
