In the days of Corne and Twakkie the Apprentice Longhair and I had a standing date to watch their crazy antics on TV – despite the lateness of the hour and her having to attend school the next day. And, the favourite singled out from the madcap duo was Rob van Vuuren in his guise as Twakkie.
So, when I saw that Rob van Vuuren would be appearing at The Boardwalk for one show only last night my reactions were swift and decisive; “3 tickets please Caley and don’t hold the horses”.
As luck would have it the Longhair was unable to accompany myself and her Apprentice so we dragged my Mother along to the show. Yup – that very same, almost octogenarian Mother who actually thinks that MyPE is quite cool but still prays endlessly for my salvation whilst loving me for being a “somewhat lapsed from organised religion person trying to get into tune with the goodness in the world but kinda not trying very hard strange first born son who is only happy when giving stuff away, engaging in vigorous debate or in the bosom of his family“.
Imagine me sitting between my young daughter and older mother, listening to Rob van Vuuren telling a joke about going to the sperm collection section of the hospital in order to make a deposit. And then finding out that his swimmers had drowned a long time ago! Yup – a lot of staring straight ahead and pretending that I had a non functioning hearing aid took place.
Anyway – the Apprentice Longhair was enthralled and thoroughly enjoyed Rob’s madcap humour. The fact that he was born in Port Elizabeth (but managed to escape!) does make one warm slightly to the small one with an obsession about people with big heads! Front row sitters be warned – you will be ragged and picked out for being a large headed one, part of a strange pair of twins, a teenager with an overdeveloped obsession to stroke an appendage or for being in a relationship too long before embarking on lustful sexual carnage with each other.
Of course my Mother has a good earthy sense of Scottish humour (That is why I thought she would enjoy South Park!) and has returned from a recent trip to the place that makes Julius and other Tenderperson’s tipple of choice, where she saw a lot of comedy – the dour Scots need a non-liquid pick me up every now and then! Her pronouncement on the efforts of Rob van Vuuren; “It is a pity that comedians have to use the F-Word to get a laugh. He funniest when taking the mickey out of himself.”
BUT, the best part of the evening was when I sort of dragged the Apprentice Longhair to meet Rob who, upon hearing that she was his biggest fan gave her a great big hug – she floated out of the Boardwalk and to the car.
Enkosi Rob.

I also pray for the Rob from now on, he has a great talent but offends certain groups of people, may he find a subject that draws in the crowds!
Funny!
Maybe he should adopt another male “off-brown / brown off” child to accompany his new daughter?
