Tales from the Robots – If these Flyers Could Talk!

19 Oct 2021 By Alan Straton

As part of my volunteer work getting the Abantu Integrity Movement (AIM) message out I find myself working the robots three times a week, handing out flyers and meeting some awesome people – along with some strange ones as well.

On the whole most people are friendly and happy to chat to this strange older fellow in a mask handing out Ward 7 and Khusta for Mayor flyers, dancing, chatting and smiling.

BUT – some strange occurrences and lessons are there for the taking as well:

  1. One guy stopped at the Buffelsfontein robots at 6:45 am with a glass of wine in his hand and a full bottle on the floor. Of course he wanted to chat and informed me that he stayed in Mount Pleasant when asked; “Uhlali Phi?” AND when I pointed out to him that he was going in the wrong direction was quite happy to tell me that he was on his way to Gqeberha (Walmer) to drop his mate off first!
  2. Another gentleman at the William Moffet and Cape Road intersection had the most magnificent bouncy afro and all his windows open on a decidedly crisp morning. As I approached him I saw him slip a spliff into hiding – now YOU know that he was then in no position to refuse my flyer… In the old days newspaper and the Yellow Pages were good targets for a bit of Papegaai Twak so I wonder what a Khusta Jack Flyer tasted like with with the Wacky Baccy!
  3. And then there was the gentleman who, upon taking my Khusta Jack flyer, said; “Maar die ou is ‘n Boy en nie jy nie!” So, he got TWO flyers – one for Ward 7 Candidate Alan Straton and one for Khusta for Mayor along with the comment that I didn’t get into the sun much – at least he read it and left me feeling like a Missionary who had made inroads with the Cannibals!

And the journey continues…

Time to move to Ward 7 and AIM to have some fun with Alan Straton!
