Take Part in an Innovative Denim Recycling Project

17 May 2011 By Alan Straton

SOS Children’s Village Port Elizabeth is appealing to members of the public to donate their old Denims (Jeans) for recycling into ‘practical and pretty’ items to be manufactured by women as part of an income generating initiative operating from the Westville informal settlement in Port Elizabeth.

A group of ladies from the community are already being trained in beadwork techniques and will soon be graduating to sewing classes.

“Our focus in Family Strengthening Programmes across South Africa is to identify children at risk of losing parental care, and to assist their care-givers with resources to prevent child abandonment. A vital part of our Family Strengthening Programme (FSP) operating in Westville informal settlement in Port Elizabeth, is to assist care-givers to become self-sufficient,” says SOS Children’s Village Port Elizabeth’s Corporate Fundraiser, Mandy Spies.

“This project is currently being facilitated by SOS Children’s Village Port Elizabeth, but ultimately the women will be responsible for running a small business that will help them generate an income and even employment for more women of their community.” she said.

As part of the initiative, Spies said the organisation was appealing to members of the public to donate their unwanted denims to the project.

“Denims in any condition are welcome, as well as sewing thread, pins, needles and other haberdashery that members of the public and businesses would like to donate. We are also in need of a manual sewing machine, in good working order, since there is no electricity in the informal settlement,” she said.

People interested in donating can contact Mandy Spies on 041 4512812 during office hours.
