Reports of Increased Business Crime in Newton Park
It was recently reported that there had been an increase in crimes committed against businesses in the Newton Park area. While ADT has not picked up a noticeable trend in increases over the past three months there have been several incidents. Mike Byers Managing Director of ADT Security Eastern Cape said, “We have not noticed a marked increase in break-ins at businesses in Newton Park during January, in fact there were more of these types of incidents during November 2010.
“There have been four break-ins at on our clients’ business properties in January and one armed robbery. These include an incident on 2 January when burglars gained access to a clothing store after forcing the front door open with a crowbar and stole men’s suits estimated to the value of R8 000. On 5 January there was an incident of common theft when suspects entered a shop in Newton Park while the owner was in the back of the shop and stole her handbag. An attempted burglary took place on 6 January when suspects broke a window and forced burglar bars in an attempt to gain access to an engineering firm. The police opened a case of malicious damage to property. On 7 January a computer screen was stolen from a business in Newton Park ADT Security Officers responded to an alarm activation and attended the scene. On 10 January three armed suspects entered a fish shop in Newton Park and help up staff at gunpoint. They stole an undisc losed amount of cash and robbed a customer of a cell phone, bank card and cash. ADT Security Armed Response Officers responded to a panic activation from the shop and arrived after calling in the incident to the South African Police Services, a case of armed robbery is being investigated,” said Byers.
Safety Tips for Business Premises:
- Consider installing motion detectors in the room as well as in the roof. Roof breaks, where criminals gain access to the premises by lifting the roof tiles, are becoming more frequent as thieves attempt to bypass alarms.
- Have your alarm company check and service your alarm system.
- Consider having security gates fitted on outer doors as this is a highly effective security measure that gives you an extra line of defence.
- Have good exterior lighting.
- Do not leave tools like ladders or spades outside, as they can be used to break into your premises.
- Clear signage indicating that you have security also helps to discourage burglars
Back-to-School Safety Tips:
- Always walk or play with a friend or friends. Always walk along streets you know. Never take shortcuts through wooded areas or empty lots.
- If someone tries to grab hold of you or take you away, fight, kick and scream: Shout out: “Help! This is not my Mom or Dad!”
- Always tell your parents who you will be with, where you will be and when you will be home.
- Never talk to strangers, no matter how friendly they seem. Always stay at least an arm’s length away from a stranger.
- If you get separated from Mom or Dad in the store, go to the nearest sales person or uniformed security guard and ask for help.
- Never ever leave the store to go to the car or to look for Mom or Dad in the parking lot.
- If a car stops or slows down beside you, run fast in the direction from which the car came.
- Never get into a stranger’s car even if they say someone you love is hurt or if they say they are supposed to pick you up. Your Mom and Dad would never send a stranger to get you.
Good News From Richmond Hill Crime Forum
The Richmond Hill Crime Forum had a fair amount of activity over the past weekend. According to the forum three cars were broken into. The forum has warned people not to leave valuable goods in cars.
On Sunday afternoon one of the dedicated i.Patrol vehicles received a call about a break in at a house in Zareba Street. ADT Security arrived on the scene rapidly but the suspect managed to escape, but not for long. Between the residents, the forum and ADT Security on the 2-way radio system that is supplied by ADT and Business Against Crime two ADT response vehicles and an I.Patrol car searched the area until a resident noticed that the suspect was clambering up a rocky embankment to Richmond Hill. One suspect was held by local residents and ADT Security apprehended another suspect found hiding in the bush. Both suspects were arrested by the Humewood South African Police Services.
