Islamophobic hate speech and incitement condemned

5 January 2017 By Port Elizabethan

Letters to the Editor

Dear MyPE The Democratic Alliance strongly condemns the Islamophobic message reportedly posted on Facebook by Liam Christian Ferreira. In his post, Mr Ferreira reportedly calls Muslims bastards and calls for the burning of Mosques. This language has no place in our constitutional democracy, where the principles of freedom, equality and dignity are paramount. Furthermore, the incitement to burn down places of worship is a criminal act which should not be taken lightly. The DA, as a party … [Read more...] about Islamophobic hate speech and incitement condemned

NOT safe at launch of “My Safe Campus”

3 June 2016 By Port Elizabethan

Letters to the Editor

Dear MyPE On Thursday 2 June SASCO and ANC members hurled stones at and attacked DASO members at the launch of DASO's "My Safe Campus" initiative at PE College. The desperation of the ANC, which sees that the DA can win Nelson Mandela Bay, is now manifesting in violence and assault. Having received written permission from Campus Management to hold the event, DASO members found the front gates padlocked upon arrival and were refused entry. We were then confronted by aggressive SASCO and ANC … [Read more...] about NOT safe at launch of “My Safe Campus”

Burning down Fort Hare will only make students’ life worse

19 May 2016 By Port Elizabethan

Letters to the Editor

Dear MyPE DASO condemns the violent vandalism that was witnessed yesterday and last night at the University of Fort Hare (UFH). We understand that several tents have been burnt and that other buildings – linked to the centenary celebration – are being targeted. We are also aware that members of SAPS are currently protecting buildings from further vandalism. This violence will not help those students who are facing a legitimate funding crisis. This will only make the situation worse, and … [Read more...] about Burning down Fort Hare will only make students’ life worse

Fort Hare SASCO and ANCYL members personally selling rooms for own account

18 April 2016 By Port Elizabethan

Letters to the Editor

Dear MyPE The Democratic Alliance has exposed the widespread corrupt dealings of ANC-aligned SASCO at the University of Fort Hare. The DA discovered that leaders from SASCO and the ANCYL from the university have been personally selling residence rooms to students who have not gone through the residential application process and have not paid the university for their rooms. In my possession I have proof that payment was made by a student to a SASCO leader in exchange for a room in a … [Read more...] about Fort Hare SASCO and ANCYL members personally selling rooms for own account

#WheresTheFunding

17 March 2016 By Port Elizabethan

Letters to the Editor

Dear MyPE South African students today are facing the difficult climate dominating institutions of higher education. While NSFAS underspends billions, financial exclusion remains a harsh reality. It has become almost impossible for students to engage in critical thinking without having to turn violent and in the process disrupt fellow student's education. If students have questions or concerns it has become expected that the only way to get answers, is through the use of force. The … [Read more...] about #WheresTheFunding

DA appalled by “cultural day” party at crippled WSU

14 October 2015 By Port Elizabethan

Letters to the Editor

Dear MyPE The Democratic Alliance (DA) is shocked to discover how R108 000 was wasted on a party at the crippled Walter Sisulu University (WSU) in Butterworth. Under the guise of "cultural day", the party was meant to celebrate the cultural diversity of WSU students and promote the WSU brand to the community of Butterworth, with expensive alcohol and food in abundance. In reality, students at WSU were left to contend with crumbling infrastructure, lack of accommodation and exorbitant … [Read more...] about DA appalled by “cultural day” party at crippled WSU

NMMU election win endorses good governance and bodes well for 2016 NMB victory

17 September 2015 By Port Elizabethan

Letters to the Editor

Dear MyPE The DA is humbled and proud to have won 12 out of the 20 seats in the 2016 NMMU Student Representative Council election, held yesterday. This translates into a 60% victory. Once again, the DA Student Organisation will govern the SRC at NMMU. This victory for the DA on the NMMU campus is indicative of growing youth support for the DA in Nelson Mandela Bay. The DA is set on winning Nelson Mandela Bay in next year's election with the continued support of our young voters. Voters … [Read more...] about NMMU election win endorses good governance and bodes well for 2016 NMB victory

TVET Students on NSFAS bursaries being charged unlawful registration fees at Lovedale College

11 August 2015 By Port Elizabethan

Letters to the Editor

Dear MyPE The DA has learnt that students at Lovedale TVET College Alice on NSFAS bursaries are being charged unlawful registration fees by the college, at up to R1,000.00 per semester. These NSFAS students are also being made to pay for their campus accommodation, which should be provided to them at no cost. I have therefore today written to Minister Blade Nzimande to request that he investigates this unlawful practice and reports to Parliament on his findings. The DA believes that … [Read more...] about TVET Students on NSFAS bursaries being charged unlawful registration fees at Lovedale College

DASO wins crucial NMMU election

18 September 2014 By Port Elizabethan

Letters to the Editor

Dear MyPE The Democratic Alliance Student Organisation (DASO) at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) in Port Elizabeth won the SRC election yesterday. DASO won 12 out of the 21 seats on the SRC. I would like to congratulate them, on behalf of the DA and the DA Youth, on their spectacular victory. They have made us extremely proud. Not only has this made the DA very proud of the DASO achievement, it has also sent a very clear message that both the electorate and the NMMU students … [Read more...] about DASO wins crucial NMMU election

DASO exposes maladministration of NMMU student funds

2 September 2014 By Port Elizabethan

Letters to the Editor

Dear MyPE Today, DASO presidential candidate, Hlomela Bucwa, and I revealed the maladministration of the NMMU SRC budget. Under the leadership of the SASCO led SRC there has been gross maladministration and wasteful expenditure going on behind the scenes. This is unacceptable and must be addressed as a matter of urgency. It is common cause that the Department of Student Governance and Development exercises oversight on the budget of the SRC. However, the effectiveness of this oversight … [Read more...] about DASO exposes maladministration of NMMU student funds

Fighting for a better deal for students

29 January 2014 By Port Elizabethan

Thousands of students across the country are currently being rejected by institutions of higher learning because they come from poor families. This year, Treasury has not allocated enough funds to the National Student Financial Aid Scheme. As a result, students who have turned to education to uplift themselves and their families out of poverty are having their dreams crushed. I have been inundated with correspondence from these students who are fast losing all hope for a better life. The … [Read more...] about Fighting for a better deal for students
