DA appalled by “cultural day” party at crippled WSU

The Democratic Alliance (DA) is shocked to discover how R108 000 was wasted on a party at the crippled Walter Sisulu University (WSU) in Butterworth.

Under the guise of “cultural day”, the party was meant to celebrate the cultural diversity of WSU students and promote the WSU brand to the community of Butterworth, with expensive alcohol and food in abundance.

In reality, students at WSU were left to contend with crumbling infrastructure, lack of accommodation and exorbitant tuition fees. Students suffer academically under these tough conditions and struggle to obtain NSFAS bursaries while campus staff works without telephone lines and furniture.

The DA believes that tertiary institutions must be places of opportunity and educational excellence for all South Africans.

In light of this, I will write to Minister Blade Nzimande requesting an immediate investigation into this irresponsible behaviour and to deliver a full report on his findings to Parliament.

Institutions of higher education must play a central role in developing young people into active participants in the economy who can help build a better tomorrow for South Africa. The DA will not stand by while this role is undermined. We cannot allow our universities to fail those who study at them.
